This Was The First Indian To Open The Cannes Film Festival In 2005!

From our desi divas serving lewks after lewks on the coveted carpet to them serving on the jury for decades now, there’s no denying that Cannes Film Festival has always been a bit more special for Indians. And this year is no different. While we’re still wrapping our heads around the couple of glamour-soaked days we witnessed at the ongoing 76th edition of the prestigious festival, we came across something that’ll add up to your pride factor for the nation.

Back in 2005, the queen of slaying at the red carpets aka Aishwarya Rai Bachchan became the first Indian to inaugurate the 58th edition of the Cannes Film Festival! Making a statement in an extravagant black gown, Aish owned the stage as she announced, “Good evening everybody. It’s an absolute pleasure and an honour for me to declare the 58th Cannes Film Festival open.”  Here, watch the video and obsess over the gorgeousness!

Aishwarya Rai and her Cannes legacy deserve a separate story for its appreciation. Back in 2002, she made her much-anticipated debut alongside Shah Rukh Khan for the screening of their film Devdas. Ever since then, she became the first Indian to consistently attend the prestigious fest almost every year. From slaying iconic saree looks to reflecting major Cinderella core in gowns with gorgeous trails on the global pedestal, Aish’s sartorial choices over the years are looked upon with reverence and awe. Safe to say, our desi OG fashionista pretty much started every trend and made the world her runway!
