Deepika Thanks Fans As Padmaavat Becomes The First Female-Led Feature To Enter The 200-Crore Club

Deepika Thanks Fans As Padmaavat Becomes The First Female-Led Feature To Enter The 200-Crore Club

After everything that the creators of Padmaavat went through to successfully release the movie in India, it certainly looks like the returns have been monumental and totally worth the controversy!

With a total collection of Rs 236 crore at the box office, the Sanjay Leela Bhasali-directed epic has become the only female-led film in the country to enter the Rs 200 crore club, also making it Deepika Padukone’s most successful film in her decade-long career!

After the Karni Sena demanded a ban on the film for ‘maligning’ the queen’s image, misrepresenting history, and “supposedly” showing a romantic relationship between her and Alauddin Khilji, states like Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh banned the film from release until the Supreme Court intervened.

Despite the court calling the ban ‘illegal,’ several theatre associations refused to release the film in the four states, but that certainly didn’t stop fans and cinema lovers to flock to the theatres to watch the much-anticipated film of the year.

Padmaavat released everywhere else (wherever there wasn’t a Karni Sena follower hurling abuses or vandalising public property for the heck of it) on January 25 to lukewarm critic reviews but tremendously positive reviews from the audience. It made Rs 100 crore in the first four days of the release, effectively leading to its snowballing success of a whopping Rs 236 crores!

Overwhelmed the by the incredible support and adulation she’s received for the movie from her fans, friends, family, and her peers in the industry, Deepika posted a video on Twitter, thanking everyone for all the love and good wishes – and we’re kinda teary-eyed to be honest!

We are all for this new, strong, female-led, wave of success gushing over the film industry. Congratulations to team Padmaavat for this achievement and here’s hoping that while this is the first, it definitely shouldn’t be the ONLY one!
