Sometimes, we watch a movie and it makes a home in our hearts and souls forever. From its music and backdrop locations to the characters, there are several things that make a movie iconic. For me, it has always been the women characters.
I believe that it’s always amusing and a delight to see the female protagonist’s character development and hence, we asked some women to reveal the reasons behind their favorite characters from desi movies.
Take a look down below!
1. “Ria Prakash from Hum Tum because she was so level-headed, warm and independent. I imagine if she was a real person, it would’ve been so great to have known her or been her friend.” -Harshita Singh
2. “Aisha Banerjee from Wake Up Sid because she was so sorted. I haven’t seen many women characters in Hindi cinema with such a clear sense of identity that does not get reduced to revolving around men solely, even though it was a love story. The best is, however, Konkona, the actor, admitting in an interview that her character and Sid’s relationship wouldn’t have lasted long.” -Vasudha Sabharwal
3. “I think that it would be Aditi Mehra Khanna (Kalki Koechlin) from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani for me. The reason behind this is the fact that she taught us to never lose hope, hold on a little longer and have the patience to find the ‘right person’. She taught us that people will point out our failures and we should embrace it and move on.” -Aarushi Sharma
4. “Without a doubt, English Vinglish’s Shashi Godbole. Her journey to rediscover herself after so many years of being disregarded by her husband and children is just heartwarming. And, no matter what people say, I still think that she should have left with Laurent – that’s it, I said it.” -Riddhima Kapoor
5. “The list cannot be completed without mentioning Kareena’s Geet Dhillon from Jab We Met. She’s one of the finest characters that exists in our cinema. She’s carefree, adventurous and just bindaas. The best part is that she always said ‘jo bhi hoga woh mera decision hoga’ and in the end, she suffers the negative results on her own. From a bubbly girl to a responsible woman, she showcased what it’s like to be a REAL woman.” -Shruti Aggarwal
6. “Zeenat Aman – she was a role model for several women back in the time. I remember how her role as Jasbir Jaiswal in Hare Rama Hare Krishna broke the internet and made her a cult favourite, including me.” -Sharmila Jain
7. “Nisha from Hum Aapke Hain Koun because she was bold, adventurous and well, just hilarious. She was also a romantic at heart. I love her.” -Ishita Grover
8. “Vijayalakshmi from Queen because she didn’t let her motherhood stop her from living her own life. She embraced single motherhood in the coolest way, ever. She was also a brilliant friend and confidant.” -Deevya Nagi
9. “It’s an unpopular opinion, but Datto from Tanu Weds Manu Returns because she was a complete badass!” -Anonymous
10. “Tabu – in all her movies because she’s abso-freakin-lutely gorgeous and talented.” -Sakkshi Jain Kapoor
As I mentioned earlier, women characters have something different about them that makes or breaks the entire movie!
