When the Kardashians began rising to popularity, there was a lot of chatter about how they were slowly appropriating black culture by enhancing their bodies, changing the colour of their skin, and even adopting smaller practices such as having longer nail extensions and wearing wigs. Many women of colour had felt betrayed by the acceptance of the Kardashians having bigger backsides and tanning their skin because those are the very traits people of colour are shamed for.
In a recent viral video, Mrunal Thakur talked about her own experience of being body-shamed. She particularly talked about having a thicker, more voluptuous body type and being shamed for that. As a response, she pointed out that the Kardashians have similar body types, yet, they’re celebrated all over the world, but Indian women, who often naturally have such body types are shamed for having the same.
In a moment of sheer honesty, Thakur boldly said ‘People pay to get this, but I have it naturally.’ And I think this is something that many women need to hear, we’re often nitpicked about where we’re thicker from or even lacking from, but the same body types are usually glorified in other cultures. Especially, western cultures.
Many women from indigenous cultures are genetically inclined to have a natural thickness in certain areas, and that’s fine.
