Did you know that in 2009, Facebook removed several pictures from its platform that showed women breastfeeding their babies? The social media giant said that any snaps that revealed nipples (read just women’s nipples) are deemed obscene and pornographic. After much outrage, FB updated its policy and issued a statement that read, “We agree that breastfeeding is natural and beautiful and we’re glad to know that it’s important for mothers to share their experiences with others on Facebook.”
Over the years, many celebrities have become vocal that women should have the space to nurse their babies without any judgement in public. Recently, actress Evelyn Sharma was trolled on social media for sharing a pic of herself while breastfeeding her two-month-old daughter, Ava. But, here’s our question for those who believe that new moms should not feed their babies publicly—what exactly is wrong with this pic?
From where we see it, Evelyn looks absolutely glorious while breastfeeding Ava. It is one of the most natural processes in the world and we don’t see how anyone can ever find it disturbing. Honestly, if netizens find a snap of a mother ensuring good health for her daughter offensive, then we wonder what ancient era they’re living in. There are several new mothers out there who have questions about feeding their babies and cannot raise them openly due to the stigmas attached to them. Celebs like Evelyn are trying to normalise breastfeeding publicly and we laud her for it. We also have a few questions for these trolls who found it alright to taint this beautiful pic with their muft ka gyaan.
Umm…Your Comment Or The Pic?
While this user’s comment is defs unnecessary, new moms normalising breastfeeding in public is quite important.
Congratulations!
Good that these trolls are finally getting to see these pics and learn a thing or two about breastfeeding.
Is There A Special Place For This?
Neha Dhupia once shared an incident about breastfeeding her daughter, Mehr, and said, “Once I was on a plane and had to feed her (Mehr), and I literally had to take her to the washroom and was only hoping that the seat belt sign does not come on before she is done.” People need to realise that new moms should be given the space to feed their babies wherever and whenever the need be. If someone has a problem with it, then it’s exactly that—their problem.
Who Gives The Right?
Here are a few questions—a) who gave these trolls the right to decide if a woman is a ‘good mother’ or not; b) who are they to decide what a mom can or cannot post on their social media handles and c) who’s even giving these certificates?
Evelyn has been frequently sharing pics of herself breastfeeding Ava on her ‘Gram. She has received flak for it several times, but the proud mama doesn’t give two hoots to these haters. While talking about it, the Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani actress said during an interview, “Such images show vulnerability and strength at the same time. I find it beautiful. Breastfeeding is one of the most natural and healthy things to do. And it really is why women have breasts in the first place. So why be shy about it?”
We totes agree! We hope that these trolls learn their lesson and let all the new moms just be.
