Emily is a woman from Chicago who works for a marketing firm. Now, her manager is up for a transfer to a newly acquired firm in Paris, but that doesn’t happen because turns out, she is pregnant. The premise of watching Emily In Paris is that you shouldn’t get into logistics – because then things will bother you. Just watch it. Watch it because going to Paris is a far fetched idea. You don’t have the money to do that. In fact, you MUST watch it because this is your only way to explore the simple pleasures of living in the city of love.
Where were we? So Emily is relocated to Paris to oversee operations at Savoir, a firm acquired by the Gilbert group. People at Savoir don’t love it. That is an understatement. To explain the intensity of things: they call her ‘la plouc’ which literally means “not sophisticated enough.” Emily also lives in a flat on the fifth floor of a building that does not have a lift. It’s not like good things don’t happen. She has a boyfriend in Chicago who promises to visit her. But wait, he calls and cancels because he thinks she shouldn’t have moved to Paris. They break up.
All is clearly not well for Emily, in the first few episodes. But then she finds a friend, Mindy. Then another one – a hot chef, Gabriel, who is her neighbour. Then a third one, Camille – an art gallery owner who is sweet and helpful. Since Emily is now broken up with her boyfriend from Chicago, she is told to live Paris a little. To fall in love and leave a trail of mistakes behind her. So that is what she does. She kisses Gabriel, and Gabriel kisses her back. Just when things seem to falling into place, she finds out that Gabriel is dating Camille – who she is also friends with. Meanwhile her work is very glamorous – so you will be misled a lot. Like working with a client, Antoine, who owns a luxury perfume company. Who, well, has an affair with Emily’s boss at Savoir.
At this point, Gabriel and Emily have a ‘will they won’t they’ dynamic. By the end of the first season, Garbiel is almost broken up with Camille – given that he is shown leaving for his home. So Emily and Gabriel get together for just the one night. The next day, and in the new season, in a very dramatic twist, Gabriel is hired by Antoine to run the restaurant he just bought. Mind blown, right?
So Gabriel is not leaving, Emily hooked up with him and Camille still doesn’t know it. When she does find out, it doesn’t end well. Which is why Camille makes a pact with Emily, stating that neither of them would date Gabriel. Camille dates him. Don’t worry, Emily meets someone new, a guy named Alfie who attends the same French class. Meanwhile, Camille falls in love with a woman named Sofia who is an artist visiting Paris for work. She also lies about a ‘work trip’ to Greece to visit Sofia’s home town. When she comes back, she tells Gabriel that she is pregnant and they get engaged.
Meanwhile Emily and Alfie have a relationship that has its own issues. Alfie is just about to leave for London for another job, and Emily throws him a party that she does not attend. He thinks she doesn’t prioritize him over her work. So he leaves. The next week, AGAIN, we find out that he hasn’t actually left because Antoine hired him for the CFO position at his firm. So Antoine hires every single man who seems to be Emily’s potential love interest. He’s her cupid. Now Alfie and Emily continue to date, until, on the day of her wedding, Camille tells Alfie that Emily and Gabriel love each other.
She leaves out the part where she has an affair with Sofia. The next season has Camille confronting her feelings about Sofia to Gabriel. Alfie is somewhere in the picture. Emily starts dating Gabriel. Camille is with Sofia and they live as neighbours because that’s how Camille likes it. It gets weird, and Sofia leaves. Camille then finds out that she was never pregnant, but hey, this is Emily In Paris, so she doesn’t tell this to Gabriel just yet.
And hey, it’s also Netflix, they love the drama. So we only find out what really happens in the second part of the same season.
