I’m at a stage in my career where I judge skincare products by their ingredient list. Many products have glossy words like ‘natural’ ‘organic’ ‘clean’ and whatnot on the packaging, but when you check the ingredient list, you’ll be shocked to learn how many toxic ingredients are in there. By toxic I mean, parabens, coal tar, sodium lauryl sulphate, artificial fragrance, oxybenzone, alcohol and many more. Another point to be noted is that just because a product says ‘organic honey’ or ‘raw milk’ on the packaging, it doesn’t mean that’s all the product consists of. There are still chemicals, fragnance and preservatives added to the product to increase its shelf-life. You either opt for products that have not more than 4-5 ingredients in them or take the natural route.
If its the latter you’ve chosen, then you’ll be happy to know that some of the ingredients you already have at home can be used to make a face cleanser! Don’t expect these to lather up like your regular face cleanser (that’s the workings of SLS) On the contrary, expect them to even out your skin and help your pores stay squeaky clean.
Just like makeup, the ‘less is more’ philosophy should also be applied to skincare.
I never believed that honey could be used as cleanser until I tried it over the weekend. A few reasons why your skin will love honey is that it has anti-bacterial and anti-septic properties that help to soothe sensitive skin and treat acne-prone skin. Plus, it’s loaded with antioxidants and helps to moisturise dry skin. When using it as a natural cleanser, make sure that your skin is damp first (or else you’ll have to deal with sticky skin) Massage your skin in circular motions and after a minute, wash the honey off with lukewarm water. I bet your skin will feel soft and look dewy after this.
If you have super dry skin and none of the commercial face cleansers are helping you, then you should turn to milk for help. Raw milk as a beauty ingredient can be used either as a facial cleanser or a toner. Since it’s rich in lactic acid, protein and Vitamin A, D, E and K, raw milk can be used as a mild exfoliator too. Pour some milk in a bowl and add 1 tsp of salt to it (salt absorbs grime and dirt on the skin’s surface) Dip a ball of cotton into the bowl and gently apply the milk solution all over your face and neck. Leave it on for a minute and wash it off with cold water.
Does your skin feel dry and dull most of the times? Even after using the best of the best cleansers? If so, then it’s your skin’s way of trying to tell you that something is off. Take a break from your commercial cleanser and give coconut oil a chance. Coconut oil contains lauric acid and does a fantastic job at eliminating dryness and making skin soft and radiant. However, you can’t use coconut oil by itself. You need to mix it with another ingredient such as honey or yoghurt to make a natural cleanser. Leave it for a minute and then wash your face with plain water.
Just like honey, yoghurt too can be used by itself as a natural cleanser. Similar to milk, yoghurt contains lactic acid which is great for dry skin. Plus, it’s mild, gentle and cool on the skin that helps to make skin firm and soft like a baby’s derrière.
There are some cleansers in the market that have tiny micro-beads in them. That stuff isn’t only nasty for the environment, but also for your skin as well. Women with sensitive skin types should stay away from any cleanser that claims to do the job of a scrub. If you really want to get rid of those dead skin cells, make a natural cleanser using 1 tbsp of oatmeal and 1 tbsp of buttermilk. Apply the paste all over your neck and face and wash it off after 30 seconds.
These ingredients are generally mild and gentle on the skin. Always check the expiry date of the ingredient before applying it all over your face. Do a patch test first just to be safe.
