One of the most recognised names in fashion and founder of an eponymous homegrown label, designer Satya Paul passed away today at the age of 79. He was undergoing treatment after suffering from a stroke on December 2. In a detailed post on Facebook where he thanked well-wishers, his son Puneet Nanda wrote about his father’s demise and his dedication towards a spiritual journey.
A Fashion Stalwart
“We are sad only a bit, mostly rejoicing him, his life and now his passing with such a blessing. Those who have been with him at any point in life would recall him as one who showered his love without hesitation or any barriers. I can attest to him having lived in totality and left fulfilled in every possible way. It is the greatest testament to him as he went joyously, without fear,” read a part of the statement made on Facebook.
Early Starts
Satya Paul founded his acclaimed label back in 1985, when India was beginning to embrace fashion as a concept and industry. Known for his experiments with prints, his play with abstract versions and colours made his recognisable designs stand out. As news of his demise broke, the label too paid homage to its founder and designer in a series of stories that charted his journey through images.
Tributes Pour In
His designs have been on the fashion forefront for several years, with celebrities such as Sonam Kapoor, Malaika Arora, Kareena Kapoor Khan wearing sarees from his ateliers numerous times.
Masaba Gupta, who had joined the Satya Paul brand in 2012 and worked on its collections long before starting her own line, paid tribute to the late designer through social media while many other industry insiders too remembered him. Viji Venkatesh, the South Asia Region Head of The Max Foundation wrote a heartfelt note as did Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the Chairperson of Biocon Limited, along with Kangana Ranaut and Madhur Bhandarkar and others.
