Deepika Padukone is working with producer Madhu Mantena for her next movie, in which she plays the powerful role of Draupadi. Based on the Mahabharata, it will be a retelling of the age-old mythological tale from the perspective of Draupadi. Apart from being the lead in the movie, Deepika is also going to co-produce it, her second attempt at production. Her first production is Chhappak, her next release, based on the real-life story of an acid attack survivor.
Deepika, elated to be a part of the movie, said, “I’m absolutely thrilled and honoured to be essaying the role of Draupadi. I truly believe that it is the role of a lifetime. While the Mahabharata is popularly known for its mythological tales and cultural influence, many of life’s lessons are also derived from the Mahabharata, but most often from its men. Telling it with this fresh and new perspective will not only be interesting but also very significant.”
The movie will be a multi-part mythological series, with the first installment scheduled to be out in 2021 on Diwali.
Talking about the movie in an interview, Madhu added, “While we have all consumed the Mahabharata all our lives, the uniqueness of our film is seeing the same story from the point of view of Draupadi, who is one of the most significant heroines in our country’s cultural history. And Deepika is not just the biggest Indian actress today, but someone who can take this narrative across borders. If it weren’t with her, we would not be making this film on such an ambitious scale.”
Apart from Chhappak, Deepika recently wrapped up shooting for Kabir Khan’s ’83, where she stars opposite hubby Ranveer Singh.
