This has been a phenomenal year for Deepika Padukone. The actress kick-started her winning spree with Louis Vuitton in May after becoming their house ambassador. DP then went on to win hearts as a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival 2022 and left the global fashion industry talking with her head-turning red carpet looks. She represented Louis Vuitton at the prestigious film festival and generated 25% of the brand’s media impact value and accounted for seven of their top ten Instagram ads! This is huge and a major driving force behind luxury fashion brand Cartier signing her up as their new brand ambassador now. Deepika is on a roll and the entire world is watching. Sadly, there are still those who are looking at DP’s success with a colonised worldview. The actress spoke about the same in a recent interview.
Speaking about her experiences in Hollywood, Deepika recalled her interaction with a reputed actor. She shared, “I know this actor… I met him at this Vanity Fair party, and he said ‘Hey by the way, you speak English really well.’ I didn’t even realise what that meant. And when I came back I said, ‘Wh78at do you mean you speak English really well?’ Did he have this notion that we don’t speak English?’
TBH, we thought the days when the West thought Indians couldn’t speak English were behind us. It’s also shocking to see that someone like Deepika, a global celebrity, is still subjected to racial prejudices.
In the same interview, Deepika spoke about why she consciously avoids Hollywood projects. “You are the scientist. You are the computer geek. You are the taxi driver. You are the therapist. You are the owner of a convenience store. I’ve had my fans ask me why I’ve not done more [global] movies. But that’s not what I’m settling for, because I am—and we are—so much more than that. It would upset me every time I went to the US. Some of the things that are said and some of the things that are done just [make it] so obvious that people don’t know the world outside of the world that they live in.”
Well, it’s time the West releases they can’t put us in a box!
