Back in 1968, Breakfast At Tiffany’s paved the way for one of the most iconic fashion partnerships to date–Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy. The world noticed as the actress took over the screens with her breakfast croissant and that little black dress. Over half a century later, the world hasn’t still quite recovered from that sight and we suspect that the colour black has a lot to do with it. There is something about the hue that commands attention and to date, a carefully curated black look is all that it takes to send the fashion factions in a frenzy. Case in point? Deepika Padukone’s recent all-black fashion outing that happens to our top favourite fashion moment right now.
Last evening, Deepika headed out for an interview in an all-black Sabyasachi ensemble and left the internet crashing in her wake. The look comprised of an ethereal black organza silk saree paired with a crew neck full sleeves blouse and matching kitten heels. Deepika kept it light albeit statement in the accessory department by going with polki earrings from the designer’s heritage jewellery collection and finished off the look with the coveted Bengal Tiger belt for a cinched effect.
We love how Deepika’s organza silk saree comes sans any embellishments and it is just the delicate, flowy fabric strategically hemmed with a black lace that does all the talking. To have a vision for the fabric, to be well-versed with its weight and flow, and to know just how it can create a picture-perfect look is designing at its best. We are specifically happy about the fact that Sabyasachi let go of all the gildings for a change. He is a fine designer and belongs to the group of select few who can create this kind of magic with just a piece of fabric. We do hope that he explores more in the direction. That said, we also have to give it to Shaleena Nathani for adding life to the vision with A+ styling.
Rest assured, this is a stellar look that is currently staying rent-free in our heads and we might or might not have dreamt about it all night long. Well, just in case you too belong to this all-black Sabyasachi look stand club, here are 7 separates that are sure to catch your attention:
If you want to re-create Deepika Padukone’s take on the all-black saree look, this organza silk beauty by Suta is the one for you. We love the scalloped hem and the smattering of silver sequins that gives it such a clear night sky kind of appeal.
If a saree sounds like too much of an undertaking at the moment then we suggest this chanderi jacket by Turn Black. The wide full sleeves with rustic gold piping has to be our favourite detail here.
This circular black dress by TheRealB is made for occassions when you want all eyes on you. The embellished drawstring collar adds to the much-needed drama and this one would beautifully sway with your body as you dance the night out.
While it is kind of difficult to stay understated in black, a girl can try, right? This flowy georgette dress by Label Shaurya Sanadhya should be of help.
A black lehenaga for your wedding festivities? Why not! Equal parts grand and risqué this is an outfit for the queens, the divas, and the fashionistas who hate to leave without making a statement.
Almost everyone owns a black suit or at least a blazer and no accolades for it ‘coz it is basic like that. However, we do stan a queen who dares to go a little extra and try on a brocade suit. Take, for instance, this woven pick by Raisin.
A few things happen to be as suave and classy as a tailored skirt coat and this Forever New pick definitely fits the brief.
So ladies, all set to kill in all black just like Deepika Padukone?
