Deepika Padukone, actress and founder of The Live Love Laugh Foundation, a non-profit organisation that aims at spreading awareness about mental health, has time and again spoken up about her struggle with depression. The actress who went through depression and anxiety during the shoot of her 2014 film, Happy New Year, broke her silence about her battle in January 2015 and revealed that she was on medication and underwent therapy as well.
In her recent interview with a magazine, Deepika chose to focus on what people believe depression to be. Back in 2018, Salman Khan had told a leading newspaper, “I see a lot of people getting depressed and emotional, but I can’t afford that luxury of being depressed or sad or emotional because no matter what I am going through, it works against me,” he said
Now, a year later, Deepika decided to ‘school’ the actor. She brought up the statement during the interview and without mentioning his name, set the balance right. She said, “People confuse it with being a bit sad. A male star said recently that he didn’t have the luxury to be depressed. As if depression is a choice!“
The actress was also asked which word truly described her journey, “The word that best describes my experience of depression is struggle. Every second was a struggle. I felt exhausted the whole time.”
When asked if she had doubts talking about it, she said, “Not at all. I felt such relief afterward. It was liberating like a crushing weight had been lifted off me. I’d do it all over again. Also, it made me more aware of myself.”
Deepika hasn’t been alone in this journey, her boyfriend of six years and now husband, Ranveer Singh has stood by the actress like a rock. The two were dating when Deepika discovered that she was battling depression. Ranveer had said in an interview that it was all her, “Whoever is suffering from it, has to get over it themselves. It has to come from inside.” The actor also said that he was ready to wait patiently for Deepika to recover, “That’s okay. I had made up my mind a long time ago that she is the one for me. I was unfazed.”
Deepika Padukone is currently shooting for ’83, the film based on the life of India’s legendary cricketer, Kapil Dev, which will be essayed by Ranveer Singh. Deepika will play the role of Romi Dev, the cricketer’s wife. Her next release is Chhapaak which is set to release on January 10 next year. The film is based on the life of the acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.
