6 Dating Terms Coined By Gen Z & What They Mean!

The easy access and rise of dating apps have given us the illusion that dating is easy for the modern generation. However, there are numerous ways for things to go wrong, and Gen Z has made a term for each of them. Care to brush up on your dating lingo? Read on for some of the most trending dating terms and what they mean.

1. Breadcrumbing

Have you ever had someone flirt with you so much that you thought they were interested but when you ask for a commitment, they aren’t sure? This is called breadcrumbing. It’s basically tricking someone into thinking they have a chance with you when you really just want to stay single and use them for an ego boost. It’s inspired by the famous Hansel and Gretel story where the evil witch leaves out crumbs only to entice them into her oven.

2. Ghosting

A popular dating term, it’s one of the few that Gen Z has stolen from millennials. Ghosting is when you abruptly cut off all communication with someone without warning. You could be laying your head on their shoulder watching a RomCom one day and not know if they’re alive or dead the next. They’re essentially a ghost to you now.

3. Pink Flag

You’ve probably heard of the green and red flags, but the pink flag is the newest addition to Gen Z lingo. A pink flag is essentially a strange trait that your partner may have that is not severe enough to be classified as a red flag. However, you must exercise caution. If your partner prefers to watch TV rather than talk to you or if he is constantly on his phone, this could be interpreted as a pink flag.

4. Wifed Up

TBH, this isn’t a very common occurrence, especially when it comes to “modern dating.” Wifed up simply means that a man is so committed to his partner that he prioritises her over all other plans and social events. When a man ditches his mates to hang out with his partner, it is also called “doggin the boys.”

5. Cuffing Season

The winter season is dubbed “cuffing season” by the Gen Z generation. If I have to be blunt, it simply means that as the temperature drops, so will your standards. According to the youngies, you feel the most lonely during the cold season because you want someone to cuddle with. This is when you settle for or (hand)cuff yourself with any partner just to stay warm.

6. Situationship

NGL, a lot of the gen Z relationships RN are situationships. It is basically when you have strong emotions toward each other and also spend a lot of time together but still don’t call each other boyfriend or girlfriend. A situationship is when neither of you has brought up the “what are we” conversation, so you just continue to live in a confusing bliss.

Which of these terms coined by Gen Z have you never heard of before?
