Dakota Johnson has always been one celebrity on the periphery of the world’s vision—a mysterious star with an array of films under her umbrella most of which I’ve never heard of. Along with her nuanced performances, one thing I have to say is that with each character she’s played and in every one of her looks on the red carpet, she’s got the most impeccable, glossy hairstyle I’ve ever seen.
So, on the occasion of her birthday, we decided to break down one question everyone’s been asking for years, “How does Dakota Johnson make her hair look so effortlessly luscious?”
In an interview with Vogue, her hairstylist Mark Townsend lists down the products he uses to get her luscious locks in place no matter what the event or role is. His aim with her hair is to create a look that is “touchable and never overdone – just young and fresh” which is why we think, with the right products, it should be easy to recreate!
Step 1: Her stylist starts by trying to make clean hair look like post-wash, second-day hair. And he achieves that by spraying the Kevin Murphy Doo Over Dry Powder Finishing Hair Spray (dry shampoo) on the scalp, a godsend for lazy girls like me.
Step 2: This is one step that I also swear by—shape your bangs. You can blow dry them, straighten them when they’re wet, or even give them a little trim; just make sure you add some texture to your bangs.
Townsend says, “…Dakota has a classic curtain bang which gets longer at the sides – it goes from the base of her nose to the top of the cheekbone at the sides. I always use thinning shears afterwards to chop up the bottom of the bangs a quarter of an inch.”
Step 3: The last step is to add some soft, beachy waves. If they start feeling crunchy, you know you’ve gone too far. Townsend likes to use the Kevin Murphy Beach Resort Look Hair Spray to give her waves some definition; just apply a little bit to your hands and apply it along the length of your hair styling your waves as you go. This step is crucial to the look and “it’s never going away because it’s accessible, people can do it on themselves and it looks cool,” he says.
With these steps at your fingertips, you’re just a spray, trim, and wave away from Dakota-approved red-carpet-ready locks!
