We’ve seen a lot of couples taking the plunge amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but a couple from Tamil Nadu took it a notch higher or should we say deeper? These lovebirds dived right into their wedding ceremony, quite literally. Two software engineers, V Chinnadurai from Tiruvannamalai and S. Swetha from Coimbatore, had an underwater wedding ceremony and we’re in awe.
The two decided to have the out-of-the-box wedding ceremony while also taking this opportunity to raise awareness about water pollution. They found a spot about 4.5kms off the coast along Neelankarai for their absolutely breathtaking ceremony.
We have to say, we haven’t seen many couples dedicating their big day to saving mother earth. We’re so proud of you guys!
According to media reports, the water baby couple had a proper traditional wedding ceremony dressed in traditional clothes underwater. The thaali and varmala ceremony took place as per the instructions of the priest. In fact, they shared that they have been trying to tie the knot since last week but could not as the sea was not calm enough for the ceremony. Speaking to a leading daily, the duo shared that it was on the morning of February 1, when they were informed that the ceremony could take place.

The lovebirds revealed that while the groom is a scuba diving enthusiast and has been doing it for 12 years, the bride was unsure of the idea.
The groom said, “I have been scuba diving for 12 years now, thanks to Aravind anna, our instructor. It was his idea that we get married undersea. We spent 45 minutes underwater. I proposed to her with a bouquet and then exchanged garlands and then tied the thali. Flowers were showered on us and then we took a few rounds underwater. We are worried about finding masks underwater. We wanted to create awareness about this and so chose our wedding as an occasion. “
The bride revealed that she was apprehensive of the idea but the groom’s family convinced her after which she took scuba diving lessons. “They (groom and his family) convinced me and after due training in a swimming pool and also after a few scuba diving sessions, I was confident enough and took the plunge today. I was nervous and so were my parents, but we had eight divers with us. It was exciting too because we’ve been trying to tie the knot since last week. It was all in the hands of the sea. The first time that I went to the bottom of the sea, I saw live fish swimming by me. It was an experience of a lifetime,” said the bride.
The newlyweds shared that they will be holding a reception later to celebrate their big day with all their guests.
We’re still awestruck by this beautiful and unique underwater shaadi. TBH, Chinnadurai and Swetha have set new #ShaadiGoals for every travel enthusiast couple out there!
