I was quite used to playing third wheel – my bestie, her boyfriend of one year and I… We went to the movies together, lunches, dinners, music fests… you name it. And on days when we had no plans, we would all hang out at the apartment that my bestie and I still share. So you get the comfort level we shared, right? Of course, I gave the couple their personal space at times – but Varun (my bestie’s boyfriend) made it a point to involve me in most of their plans.
Honestly, I always thought of him as this really nice, loving guy who made me feel so comfy around him. Things were easy and we all got along very well. Varun would often compliment me on days he thought I looked good and he even offered to drop me off to college even when my bestie didn’t have class at the same time.
We were almost like one little family, and then came that dreadful day… My best friend got delayed at her evening dance class and Varun had reached our place because we had dinner plans with an extended group of friends. As Varun and I were watching TV on the couch in the living room, he put his arm around me. To be honest, I wasn’t too comfortable with that, but I didn’t express my disapproval in any way thinking he’s just being warm. Next moment he leaned in towards my face and tried to kiss me! I sprang up and got off the couch, and awkwardly said to him, “What do you think you’re doing?!” With an embarrassed look on his face, he replied, “Don’t get me wrong but of late I’ve developed feelings for you and I think I’m in love with you.”

Discussing this any further seemed like the wrong thing to do. So I told him to stop right there and leave the house. I told him to return only when his girlfriend is home and that he dare not come anywhere near me. He followed my instructions and as he left, my heart was beating faster than ever. There were so many things running in my mind!
After having a glass of water and calming myself down, I began to think of how I wanted to go about this. Obviously, I HAD to share this with my bestie! She loved him a lot and I had been witness to that for a year now. There was no way to sugarcoat this for her so I decided to wait until she got home and then did the needful.
I told her exactly what happened, and as expected, she was in tears. Neither of us thought Varun was capable of doing something like this. She turned towards me and said, “I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that. I hope you’re okay.” At this point, I only wanted her to be okay. After a few moments of silence and some tears, we decided that there was no point dignifying Varun with even a confrontation regarding this. She sent him one plain text and it was over. No questions asked, no explanations given – this was the end of it.

Now, 4 years on, we laugh at this incident and at what a jerk Varun was and probably still is. My bestie took a few months to get back to normal life – as they say, ‘time heals everything’. If we have to think of the good side of this, this incident only brought me and my bestie closer.
