Is it just me, or does every other girl also wonder why brown is almost always a no-no when it comes to styling? TBH, it’s not that the colour is always a ‘yuck’ inducing sight (sometimes, if worn wrong, not always). It’s that it’s tough to style, so it takes time and effort to throw together an outfit that’s more of a hit than a miss. So rest up, queens, you’re in luck. It’s about time you warm up to brown because I’ve done all the groundwork for you (with a little help from B-Town’s most stylish women, of course). Yes, there are ways to wear the forbidden colour and look like a bar of decadent dark chocolate, rather than a pile of… well, poo. So here goes:
1. Rust Like That
Brown does not always have to be a party pooper if you know what I mean. If you make the right style choices, like Parineeti Chopra here, it can get ‘belgian chocolate’ addictive. A rust coloured tailored kurti with a pair of tapered dhoti pants is a fail-proof combination; wear with heavy chandbalas, bangles and heels for a formal event, or with juttis and antique looking earrings for a relaxed day out.

2. Layer Cake
Sonakshi Sinha is giving us all sorts of #OOTDgoals with this layered look. With a colour like brown, layering can do wonders, especially with different shades… but don’t mix more than 2-3 of them either, or it’ll start to look like a mess. Invest in a good chocolate brown pantsuit and you’re gold.

3. Fashion Week Frosting
Punit Balana’s Summer Resort 18 collection had a series of looks featuring unexplored shades of brown, and I’m a fan. The showstopper at his LFW show, Diana Penty showed off the theatrics of the tiered berry brown skirt with a twirl – proof that the colour can give you fairytale moments if you wear it right. Plus, brownie points for the checkered crop top and sequin blazer in similar hues.

4. Fudge Feels
The trick to styling brown into your look? Playing with co-ordinated prints like stripes and polka dots, and Bollywood’s new entrant Sanya Malhotra knows it. Her fudge-coloured shirt and brown+cream polka skirt took my thoughts on brown from ‘dump’ to ‘dessert’ in a snap. If you’re feeling the outfit, add some more sauce with accessories in shades of tan; take a cue from Sanya’s bucket bag and strappy flats.

5. Caffeine Kick
Trust Sonam Kapoor to wear a coffee brown men’s bandhgala and make it look divine. Worn as a cape over a monochrome pairing, it adds a sophisticated edge to an otherwise fairly common look. India’s youngest style icon’s stamp of approval is all you needed. Getting fonder of brown, aren’t we?

6. Bronze Babe
‘Less is more’ isn’t just a saying, it’s an art technique. If you’re looking for ways to wear brown without doing too much, pick something in a royal-like texture or fabric. For instance, the lovely Aditi Rao Hydari pulls off a simple silk shirt and maxi skirt in bronze. The sheen of the fabric is bright enough to make the look shine, isn’t it? Add jhumkas and a statement clutch to work this outfit at a wedding or Sangeet night.

7. Sweet Tooth
We’re ready to dig into this girl-next-door outfit Athiya Shetty’s so effortlessly working. This is a great way to start if you’re still unsure about brown. You can never go wrong with a brown top and a pair of high waisted denim pants. Accessorise with statement pumps and golden fringe earrings.
