Can’t Get Over SS Rajmouli’s Epic Entertainer ‘RRR’? Here’re 5 Similar Films You Can Treat Yourself To

SS Rajamouli’s RRR is currently receiving several accolades from all over the globe and I’m definitely not surprised. After all, this grand spectacle had everyone invested in it’s epic tale about two Indian revolutionaries, who shared a heartwarming bromance. Not to mention, it also made people feel a rollercoaster of emotions.

So, if you’re anything like me (or the rest of the world), you’ve already watched this entertainer 10x times. And now, you want to look for a similar visual treat like RRR. Well, guess what? You’re in luck! I’ve just rounded up several period films that are truly worth your time. Here, take a look:

Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India

IMDb

If you haven’t watched this 2002 Hindi film yet, you’re really missing out. Set in pre-independent India just like RRR, Lagaan tells the story of a group of villagers who engage in a serious game of cricket with the British. The stakes are high because if the villagers win the game, they will get exempted from a hefty tax price. Besides this gripping storyline, the plot also includes a heartwarming love story that will leave you swooning. With magic in it’s screenplay and storytelling, I honestly can’t think of a single reason why you won’t love this one.

Baahubali

IMDb

The Baahubali franchise was also made by the same makers, which explains why it was such a phenomenal movie. This film tells a fictional story of the kingdom Mahishmati and unpacks the hidden tales of it’s past and present rulers. It’s got all the elements of a super-hit film, including stunning landscapes, a nail-biting plot line, and several groovy songs and dance numbers. What more could one ask for?

Padmaavat

IMDb

If there’s a Bollywood director who could come close to matching SS Rajamouli’s vision, it’s Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This marvellous storyteller also directs on grand sets just like SS, which are often set in pre-historic times. Case in point—SLB’s 2018 film, Padmaavat. Equal parts thrilling and entertaining, this Indian period spectacular chronicles the story of queen Padmavati, who is happily married to a Rajput ruler. However, things turn upside down when a ruthless sultan, Alauddin Khalji, declares war on their kingdom coz’ of his obsession with the queen. And the queen does everything to protect herself and her kingdom?

Magadheera

IMDb

Also directed by SS, this Telugu-fantasy flick will have you glued to the screen from start to finish. Without giving away too much, this movie is about the protagonist Harsha, who falls in love with Indu. Things get ugly when Harsha is falsely accused for killing Indu’s father. However, in his quest to clear his name, Harsha rediscovers his 400-year-old past that also remains relevant to his present. The best part? Indu and Harsha were also lovers in his last life. Sounds absolutely magical, right?

Ponniyin Selvan: I

IMDb

At its core, this Tamil-adventure film is about power struggle. Adapted from Kalki Krishnamurthy’s novel with the same name, the film talks about the Chola empire and how the current rulers plot and scheme to stay in power. The film is rich with myriad characters and the witty dialogues is what makes the film for me. Also, it would be unfair not to talk about the music in this cinematic masterpiece, which is beautifully composed by A.R Rahman. Do give this film a watch if you want to be engaged by a complex storyline. But be warned, the movie will have you second-guessing each character’s intentions at every step.

So, which movie from this list will you watch first?
