can we use powder after sunscreen

What Comes First? Powder Or Sunscreen? Here’s Your Answer

It’s simple, right? You apply sunscreen before leaving the house. It’s almost involuntary now. But while you know all about the benefits of sunscreen, you should also know when to layer it on in your routine. If you think about it, it’s not necessarily about the sunscreen you’re using. It’s about the correct application of the product. Applying it at the wrong time just makes it useless.

This was my problem. While I wanted to sun-proof my skin, I did want to pat some powder on to prevent my makeup from budging during a long, intense day. I also knew there was a way to get the best of both worlds.

If sunscreen comes in as a last step and loose powder is meant to come in at the end as well, which one goes first? It might sound confusing but it’s pretty straightforward and I just figured it out.

Can We Use Powder After Sunscreen?

As a thumb rule, sunscreen should be the last step of your skincare routine, after which you can apply any makeup product. If you’re thinking, “Can I apply powder after applying sunscreen?” The answer is yes! Just wait for about 15-20 minutes for the sunscreen to absorb, after which you can apply face powder.

For the unversed, there are plenty of powder sunscreens available in the market that offer additional sun protection, absorb excess oil, and give you an ultra-matte finish. But they shouldn’t be used as your primary form of sun protection. While sunscreen powders are effective, you should think of them as an extra layer of protection from sun rays. Sunscreen powders are also pretty convenient for constant touch-ups.

So can we use powder after applying sunscreen? Definitely.

If you’re looking for something light and cooling, the POPxo H2O Booster Sunscreen Gel is it for you. The gel-based product quickly seeps into your skin without leaving any stickiness behind. Thanks to its composition of Hyaluronic Acid, it hydrates the skin from the inside-out while at it. It even contains Vitamin C to dial up that radiance.

Can We Apply Powder Before Sunscreen?

Ideally, sunscreen should be applied directly onto the skin, or just above the moisturiser for it to protect your skin from sun damage. Sunscreen in cream or gel form should be applied underneath any layer of makeup or powder for it to be most effective. So, can we apply powder before sunscreen? No. Powder or any kind of makeup product should be layered over the sunscreen, and not under it. As for powder sunscreens, they can be applied with a brush over your makeup.

How Long Should You Wait For Sunscreen To Dry Before Applying Makeup?

Wait for at least 2 minutes for your sunscreen to fully absorb into your skin post-application. Make sure you’re distributing the product evenly throughout the face for it to work.

Applying makeup without a pause in between can dilute your sunscreen and render it ineffective. I always do this; no matter how much of a hurry I am in. During this time, avoid touching your face. You can proceed with the rest of your routine after this.

In What Order Should You Apply Makeup With Sunscreen?

I’m going to break it down further. There are two scenarios:

  • If your sunscreen is chemical-based, begin with it before going in with your moisturiser. This type of sunscreen needs to absorb into your skin to protect it. If you go in with moisturiser first, the product will create a barrier over it and prevent penetration.
  • If your sunscreen is mineral-based, it can go on top of your moisturiser.

Next comes your makeup. Go in with a primer first before doing your base. This includes your foundation and concealer. You can dab on your powder at this point to absorb any shine and mattify your skin.

After this, apply bronzer and blush (or either), do your eyes and brows, and conclude with lipstick. That’s how simple it is.
