Every year lots of newcomers enter Bollywood. Aiming to make it big, they try to impress fans and critics with their debut films. But let’s admit it, some end up making terrible choices or are just not born for acting. But what burns is they still end up winning awards. This is what makes us say, “These awards are rigged.”
But if these Bollywood celebs can win awards for their not-so-worthy performances, we all have hope. Jokes apart, here’s a list of celebs who won the best debut award and it’s unbelievable.
1. Bobby Deol & Twinkle Khanna– Barsaat (1996)
Bobby Deol plays the role of Badal, a village boy whose father sends him to the city for his education. He falls in love with Twinkle Khanna, the daughter of a rich businessman. A typical love story that fizzled at the box office. Not only was the film nonsensical, but Bobby also wore a perpetual sad look on his face that made him quite unattractive to look at TBH. As for Twinkle, we’re glad she’s found her calling because acting in films wasn’t quite her cup of tea. But guess what? They both won an award for their debut performances. I can hear you whisper nepotism.
2. Mahima Chaudhry – Pardes (1998)
Remember the iconic too bad that it’s good fight scene between Apoorva Agnihotri and Mahima Chaudhry in the Las Vegas hotel room? That’s probably the only bearable scene in this film. Mahima overacted and her shrieking voice was close to being unbearable. But the actress won the award for the best debut female for Pardes.
3. Fardeen Khan – Prem Aggan (1999)
Every time Prem Aggan is spoken about, the first thing that comes to the mind is haseen dard. Fardeen Khan’s emotionless facial expressions and creepy dialogues made this film one of the most mocked in its days. But well, Fardeen still won an award. Kill me!
4. Tusshar Kapoor – Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai (2002)
The only memorable role Tusshar Kapoor managed to impress the audience with was in the Golmaal franchise. He should’ve just acted in those films only. His debut film Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai was rather disappointing. His confused facial expressions, overdone action scenes and weird dance moves will make you cringe. It’s unbelievable how he got an award for his debut performance.
5. Esha Deol – Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe (2003)
Daughter of two of the most loved celebs in Bollywood, Hema Malini and Dharmendra, Esha was one of the most awaited star kids in Bollywood. But unfortunately, she went for a really bad movie for her debut or maybe she wasn’t cut for the movies at all. She made no effort whatsoever in the film and didn’t act at all. So, it comes not as a surprise, but as a shock how she won an award for it.
6. Shahid Kapoor – Ishq Vishk (2004)
The movie was sexist, misogynistic and wrong on way too many levels. Shahid played an overexcited teenage boy who wanted to sleep with his girlfriend in order to look cool and dumped her when she refused. To know more about the film click here. Despite all that, it was a huge hit and Shahid won the ward for his debut performance in Bollywood.
7. Lara Dutta – Andaaz (2004)
A super confident model and former Miss Universe, Lara Dutta’s debut was a disappointment. Her performance in Andaaz was quite annoying. The song Rabah Ishq Na Hove was the only good thing about this film. It was a box office failure and yet Lara Dutta won an award for her supposed breakthrough performance.
8. Sooraj Pancholi – Hero (2016)
A big zero at the box office, Hero was unexplainably bad. Sooraj Pancholi played a gully ka goonda who falls in love with Athiya Shetty, who played the daughter of an inspector. He sure flaunts his muscular body but failed to keep the audience captivated with his dialogue delivery. But if you’re a star kid, you win an award irrespective of your performance, right? Why didn’t they give one to Athiya too, then?
