Reading is one habit that every human being should include in their life. Not only do books serve as a great form of escape but also teach us a thing or two about life. They actually help us develop our ideas and imagination for a better life. In an attempt to help you read just a little bit more, here are 10 young adult books that you will absolutely love!

1. The Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter, I’m pretty sure, needs no introduction. And for a Potterhead like me, it is exhausting to think of words to describe this magical journey. Although, I would begin by saying, what an ageless haven it is where creativity and imagination lurk in every page of the books. It makes you believe that you too have a bit of magic in yourself, you need only dare to believe! Harry Potter brings me out of my blues, Harry Potter gives me direction when I’m off my cues. In short, ‘After all this time?’ ‘Always!’ – Sayunkta Jain, Editorial Coordinator

2. The Fault In Our Stars

This book will make you laugh and cry in equal measure. The novel’s protagonists are suffering from cancer, but their sickness doesn’t take away from the fact that they are still adolescents who are also just trying to get past the awkwardness of teenage years. To quote a line from the book, which perfectly defines my affections for it, ‘Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.’ – Amrita Paul, Senior Lifestyle Writer

3. The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

This book follows the journey of Charlie, as he stumbles through adolescence and enters the new and harsh world of adulthood. Every girl who has just entered her twenties will be able to relate to Charlie. The story has its ups and down, like our lives, but the plot is really intense and you’ll feel like you’re following Charlie while he tries to adjust to the new world. You’ll definitely connect to it! – Sonali Pawar, Beauty Writer & Editorial Coordinator

4. Eleanor & Park

You remember what your first love felt like? Waiting at the bus stand just for a glimpse of the other person and how the first time you held hands felt like your world will never be the same again. Eleanor & Park is the story of two teenagers falling in love for the first time. But knowing at the same time that life changes and first love is hardly ever your last. Every time I read Eleanor & Park, I go back to school days and crushes and it is a great feeling altogether. – Isheeta Sharma, Senior Lifestyle Writer

5. The St. Clare’s Series

I had never been to a boarding school when I laid my hands on this book and so, as I read through it, magic unfolded in front of my eyes. Centred around a pair of twins, the whole dynamic of a boarding school fascinated me beyond words. It made me dream of midnight feasts and giggle-y girls’ dorms, cream buns and nature walks! How I wished St Clare’s actually existed! – Manika Parasher, Lifestyle Writer & Copy Editor

6. The Chronicles Of Narnia

These seven fantasy novels were a good escape for me during my high school years. It’s a mind-boggling series – I mean, it triggers your brain to focus on all kinds of realms and the possibility of their existence. It’s not just that Lucy discovered a secret passage to another world… She actually discovered a passage to her own kingdom! That’s one of the fantasies teenagers like to read about, don’t you think? Ruling a kingdom of your own that none of your friends know about… It’s a secret.  – Chhavi Porwal, Senior Trending Writer

7. Stargirl

Stargirl (yes, that is the name of the protagonist), is an eccentric homeschooled teenager who joins a regular high school. What follows is tons of bullying by her peers but this never dampens Stargirl’s spirits because she has one person, an upperclassman, Leo. Written in the form of letters sent to each other this is the story of Leo and Stargirl as they both struggle to accept each other and, in turn, accept themselves. When I read it in high school, I formed an instant connection with both the characters and that is hard to find in any book. – Shivani Shrivastava, Trending Editor

8. The Catcher In The Rye

Catcher in The Rye is only the most historically significant YA novel. The struggles of being a teenager are so beautifully captured by Salinger that even though it was written in 1951, it doesn’t fail to strike a chord even today. When I read it in high school, I could connect with the confusion and crankiness of being a teenager that Salinger’s Holden Caulfield goes through in the book and his teenage angst got along with mine really well! – Somya Suresh, Senior Writer & Copy Editor

9. The Princess Diaries

As per usual – the movies don’t do justice to the books. The Princess Diaries series, written by Meg Cabot, follows the life of Mia Thermopolis – a gawky teenager, living in New York City, who is thrust with the responsibility of a small European nation. While most girls would be thrilled to discover that they are a princess, Mia is not pleased (to say the least). The makers of the movie tried very hard but didn’t manage to capture the story. In the books, Mia’s character is much more relatable, her grandmother is way more annoying and her love interest, Michael Moscovitz, is SO much cuter. – Nitya Uppal, Fashion Editor

10. Thirteen Reasons Why

If you’ve already watched the Netflix original series, you might as well give it a miss. But if you haven’t, this is a must read. This book captures the teenage angst in the most profound way ever. It gets the message across that an action that may seem insignificant to you may end up changing somebody else’s life. This one is for every person out there – whether you were the bully or the bullied. – Srishti Gupta, Senior Lifestyle Writer
