#FlashbackFriday: 15+ Outfits From Kuch Kuch Hota Hai That Would Still Work In 2020!

Karan Johar’s directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, created a real frenzy back in the day. There certainly are problematic angles in the storyline and how it was executed, but the wardrobe of the star cast remains worthy of our attention, even though we aren’t talking about that ‘cool’ chain for sure.

Manish Malhotra, the man behind the styling, was creating a stir even at the time of the movie’s release in 1998. Given how timeless and on-point some of the looks still are, more than two decades later, there are little surprises as to why. Be it effortless Indian wear that you could recreate today and not look out of place or carefully curated athleisure looks that are now ubiquitous, the Bollywood film had a lot in store for all the fashion aficionados.

Casual Looks On-Fleek

Athleisure is a word well established in the fashion lexicon but in the late 90s, it was still unheard of. Be it the DKNY tracksuits seen on the basketball court or the ever-so-sleek and minimal dress worn by a 19-year-old Rani Mukerji, the film wasn’t shy on the sportswear influence. Add to the uber-casual sweatshirts, logo tees and stellar denim and you have a wardrobe ready to be worn as in the current time. Take a look at some of them below.

Going Out In Style

Come to think of it, Rani Mukerji’s sartorial style in the Karan Johar film has stood the test of time. Even today, you could take cues from the Bollywood movie when it comes to vibrant co-ords worn with ease, layering featuring oversized outerwear and the high-octane mini dress ideal for shindigs. Add to that subtle and lasting makeup and you wouldn’t have to have a care in the world on the dressing-up front.

Indian Wear That Was Timeless

One might say that traditional Indian wear remains the same to its core, but a cursory glance at 90s films will have you looking at over-the-top outfits that scream with loud prints and unnecessary glimmer. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, on the other hand, kept it subtle. Sheer sarees with a hint of lace, or solid versions with an emphasis on the blouse; pastel hues and layering kurtas with sleek trousers came to the forefront, bringing with them a timeless appeal. Here’s taking a look at some of the Indian wear outfits from the film.

Bridal Looks Worth A Try

We may not agree in full with the OTT bridal makeup but some elements remain the highlights in trousseaus even now. Think elaborate earrings, embroidered dupattas and lehengas featuring a mix-and-match of prints. Not to forget the off-route orange lehenga as opposed to the go-to red iteration.

Solid Menswear Inspiration

Given that it began with Rahul’s cringe ‘cool’ chain, the film did pick up on the menswear too. Tailored suits, some of them oversized, made an appearance on Shah Rukh Khan, while Salman Khan was given a sleeker and monochrome approach, the black and navy versions standing out. Should you wish to borrow from the boys, there is no dearth of inspiration!
