Did you know that chemicals in some cosmetic products, especially sunscreens and even cleansing balms can be extremely harmful to coral reefs? Studies have shown that about 10% of the reefs have suffered as a result of sunscreen bleaching. A common ingredient in sunscreen called Oxybenzone washes off your skin and gets into the water. The chemical then gets absorbed by corals causing a domino effect on everything from the corals to marine life. Hence, using ones that are reef-friendly is the need of the hour.
