The internet is flooded with beauty tips and this is information that we all tend to lap up. Most of us have categorized some of these tips as myths, while the others are tips and tricks that we swear by. Now ladies, what if we told you that there are certain common ‘beauty myths’ doing the rounds that are actually true? Before you start to wonder which ones these are, we present to you 10 beauty myths that are, in fact, true!
1. Tying your tresses in a tight manner is bad for the hair
Tying your hair in high and tight buns and ponytails may give you a sleek look, but it wrecks your mane, ladies. It may lead to breakage, which eventually leads to thinning of the hair. Skip these hairstyles and opt for a chic low-do, we say.
2. Washing your hair 2-3 times a week is better than washing it daily
Washing your hair daily, unless you live in extremely humid climate, dries it out. The natural oils produced by the scalp are lost and not enough time is given for them to be replenished. Restrict hair washing to 2-3 times a week, and try dry shampooing in between washes, if your hair gets too oily.
3. Oily skin needs hydration
All types of skin need hydration, both internally and externally. Since most cleansers can dry up the skin, especially if used frequently, use a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser to make sure your skin stays supple. This will stop the overproduction of oil, thereby reducing the oiliness of the skin. Drinking lots of water will also hydrate your skin well.
4. Makeup can cause acne
The wrong kind of makeup can result in acne, ladies. Use mineral makeup as that is non-comedogenic (aka won’t clog your pores) and make sure you take it off before you sleep. Leaving makeup on when going to bed is one of the worst things you can do to your skin.
5. If a product tingles on your skin, it means that it is working for you
Not necessarily. Products containing the likes of tea tree oil tend to tingle mildly but it usually subsides in a minute or two. Ingredients such as camphor and menthol can cause tingling and a temporary cooling sensation but are quite harsh on the skin. As a thumb rule, if your tingling sensation lasts more than a few minutes, chances are that you’re allergic to one of the ingredients in the product or that the product as a whole is harsh on your skin.
6. Blackheads can only be removed through an extraction
This is true. None of those blackhead removing masks and scrubs actually work effectively. This is because a blackhead is embedded in the skin and can only be effectively removed by an extraction. The masks and scrubs slough off the top layer of the skin and loosen the blackhead but don’t actually remove it.
7. Rubbing your eyes causes wrinkles
Rubbing your eyes can stretch and pull the delicate skin around your eyes causing it to age prematurely, lose elasticity and eventually cause wrinkles. While you may not get crows feet by merely rubbing your eyes, take it from us, it still is a habit you want to ditch!
8. Cosmetics belong in the refrigerator
As bizarre as this may seem, we live in a tropical country which means high temperatures, and ladies, the humidity can damage our cosmetics to quite an extent. While it may be alright to store your cosmetics at room temperature during the winters, it is advisable to keep products like lipsticks and perfumes in the fridge to preserve their efficacy. Many compounds disintegrate in the amount of heat we are subjected to in India, so free up some space in your refrigerator ASAP.
9. Beer is awesome for your hair
While you may not be a fan of the smell of beer in your hair, it does have some wonderfully nourishing properties. It gives your hair a thicker and fuller appearance while giving it a shine and bounce. The alcohol content disinfects and cleanses your hair and scalp. It is one of the best hair thickening products!
10. Sticking to a set of products yields good results
If a set of products works for you, stick to them to get the best results. With the markets flooded with new products each day, it can be tempting to experiment. But refrain from that for the sake of your skin. It’s ok to change up a product or two depending on the needs of your skin at that time, but it is otherwise wise to have a tried and tested skin care routine that suits your skin.
