The participation and progression of women in the field of politics is pivotal and integral to a society’s evolution. Because, if people from different demographics and walks of life don’t get a seat at the table and aren’t represented properly, safety and civilisation is but a dream for the general public.
Which is why Baryl Vanneihsangi’s win as Mizoram’s MLA is a win for women everywhere. A member of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Baryl Vanneihsangi emerged as a winner in the Mizoram assembly election with a total of 9,370 votes, defeating Mizo National Front’s (MNF) candidate F Lalnunmawia.
Baryl has studied masters of arts from the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong, Meghalaya. She started her career as a TV anchor and even has professional experience as a Radio Jockey. The new MLA also has a following of over 251k.
The fact that she has worked as a corporator in Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC), only adds to the list of accomplishments in Baryl’s resume, I mean doesn’t she seem like an ideal candidate for such a position? It’s interesting to see a woman with such varied experience and such a strong educational background, take up a prominent political seat.
The 32-year-old has expressed her views and said that women should be able to chase all their dreams and passions. And that this win is a message for women everywhere who are perhaps looking for motivation to achieve their goals.
Along with Baryl Vanneihsangi, Lalrinpuii from Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) secured the Lunglei East constituency with 5,641 votes and MNF candidate Prova Chakma secured 7167 votes compared to Nihar Kanti Chakma’s 6456.
