The Chosen One: Bakuchiol’s Our Fave Non-Irritating Retinol Alternative

Look, I’m not denying the power of retinol. What can it not do? It turns the clock on your skin—first. It’s just as stubborn as your acne. Relentless. It brightens, reduces lines and wrinkles by stimulating the production of collagen (the protein responsible for the elasticity of your skin), improves your texture, prevents acne flare-ups and breakouts, and promotes the renewal of cells to reveal radiant skin.

But retinol isn’t the simplest to deal with—cue experts advising us against introducing the formula to our skin too quickly, mixing it with other ingredients, layering it onto the skin during the day, and more. And it’s a little harsh too—what with a lot of us struggling with unwarranted redness, inflammation, and peeling as side effects. That’s where Bakuchiol comes in. It’s like Retinol—just not on steroids.

Why You Can Bank On Bakuchiol

It’s pretty much like Retinol. It encourages the production of collagen, and improves the turnover of cells to fight off signs of ageing like wrinkles and lines; tightens and firms the skin; improves texture and tone by diminishing spots and pigmentation; and reveals fresh-looking, youthful skin over time. And since it doesn’t trigger the skin, those with acne and hyperpigmentation can try working it into their routine too. To make it simple, Retinol does prevent acne in the long term, but its side effects jeopardise that in the short term.

Bakuchiol’s Edge Over Retinol

Okay—I’m not saying Bakuchiol is better than Retinol. In all honesty, enough studies haven’t been conducted to gauge the efficacy of the ingredient; but current reports do attest to its benefits. Bakuchiol is an all-natural, plant-derived alternative to retinol. It’s derived from the seeds of babchi plant. This means that it’s milder on the skin, ideal for vegans, and perfect for those suffering from conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis. Basically, it’s suitable for all types of skin, and it doesn’t lead to dryness, irritation, or peeling. And it pairs well with other skincare ingredients—unlike retinol and its negative interactions with certain formulas. So, yeah, it does have a bit of an edge over Retinol. Here are 3 of our favourite Bakuchiol formulas.

How To Use It

Apply the formula just like you would any other skincare product. This one can be layered on before your moisturiser. But it depends on the consistency of the formula too. If it’s an oil, it can come in after the moisturiser. If it’s a serum, layer it on before the moisturiser. You can use Bakuchiol during the day—unlike Retinol. Even though it won’t increase your sensitivity to the sun, make sure you’re concluding with sunscreen anyway.

And that’s enough of stalking bakuchiol.
