Arjun Kapoor and Malaika Arora have been in a steady relationship for years now. Yet, there have been times when the couple has faced brutal trolling and insensitive remarks about their bond. From their age gap to wedding plans, the two have often been subjected to awkward questions that are totes unnecessary and highly personal. We give it to Malaika and Arjun for tackling these situations and online toxicity with utmost maturity. We’re sure that it’s not an easy thing to do and recently during an interview, the actor opened up about it.
While talking to Janice Sequeira on her talk show, Social Media Star With Janice, Arjun revealed why he decided to make his relationship Insta-official. He said that instead of letting people speculate about his love life and jump to conclusions, he liked having control of his own narrative. “It’s better to just give it respect on your own by stepping out and saying, ‘This is our boundary, and now we are together. When we step out in public, when we pose for you, you take our pictures. Tomorrow you write about it or we speak about it,” he said. That’s quite sensible and we totes see his point.
While talking about trolls, Arjun also said that people in India love to gossip and have opinions about everybody’s personal life. But, he never takes them seriously because it takes one interview to change their perception completely. “People have opinions because they love having opinions. In India, we love gossiping, we’ve all become jananis (women). We all want to discuss ‘When will they get married? They don’t look good together. You think this is going to last? What does she see in him? Look at the way he is looking. Career will be ruined. This is said for the sake of saying…All it takes is one Friday or one interview where you explain yourself, all it takes is that much time for people’s perceptions to keep changing about you,” he said.
Wait a minute. While we see his point that one shouldn’t let online negativity get to them, we don’t understand why is he generalising and insulting women altogether? How has everybody in the country become ‘jananis’ by interfering in other people’s lives and why are all gossip mongers being called women? Why is he associating these traits with a specific gender? The trolls that Arjun is talking about are a bunch of useless fellas who belong to almost all communities and gender. We fail to see why the actor is comparing these folks with women.
Now, you may come out in the actor’s defence and say “Oh, it’s just a way of saying, he doesn’t mean it.” We would like to point out that it’s 2022 and we expect more accountability from our Bollywood celebs. It’s ironic that Arjun is talking about online negativity and trolls, and at the same time, demeaning a particular section of society.
While we see most of Arjun’s point, we wish that he preaches what he prays as well.
