Ariana Grande has always been a multi-hyphenate trendsetter. Ever since she introduced the world to her iconic high ponytail and cat eye she’s been at the epicenter of countless transformative fashion and makeup moments.
In today’s story, we’ll be uncovering how she does her quintessential cat eye, or more like an exaggerated, eyeshadow version of the conspicuous 60s cat eye: a sharply extended winged eyeliner with an upward flick towards the outer corner of your eyes.
“One of my favourite things to do is create a ’60s-looking cat-eye,” she said in an interview with Vogue. The version we’ll be experimenting with is a “shadowy version” of the liquid line cat eye. With its enduring appeal, the ’60s cat eye has transcended generations, evolving into a versatile trend that continues to be reinterpreted.
How Does She Do It?
For her eyes, the Don’t Look Up singer starts with the r.e.m. beauty Full Night’s Sleep Cooling Blurring Undereye Balm. She blurs any lines and creates a smooth base for her makeup, following it up with the Shiseido Benefiance Wrinkle Resist 24 Pure Retinol Express Soothing Eye Mask. This, she keeps on for at least 3 to 4 hours before starting her makeup routine.
She then starts from the top. Ariana fills in her brows with the MAC Eye Brows Styler in the shade Fling. The singer claims she likes to make the ends of her eyebrows pretty short so she can shape and lift them into sort of an Audrey Hepburn-ish brow.
For her eyeshadow, she picks up the Bobbi Brown All Nudes Eye Shadow Palette and goes in with a brownish-pink shade and extends the pigment to her browline. Then it’s time for the much-awaited cat eye!
She starts the ’60s-inspired cat eye with the r.e.m. beauty Multi-Use Eye Stick in Interglactic (we’ve added a dupe!) and applies it in the same way as the eyeshadow, but makes a wing at the end of her eyelid. After that, it’s back to the Bobbi Brown Palette from which she uses the black and rust shade to line her eyes (instead of using eyeliner). The singer tops it off with the r.e.m. beauty Flourishing Volumizing Mascara to lenghten her lashes.
For the finishing touch, she adds a line of the Charlotte Tilbury Rock ‘N’ Kohl Bedroom Black Eyeliner, extending it to the end of her brows for some definition.
“That is it!” Grande proclaims after the liner is done. “I think we did a pretty in pink cat-eye moment today,” she said, wrapping up her chaotic routine with a spritz of setting spray to keep it all in place.
I know I’m saying yes to this look and taking notes from Ariana for my Friday night party!
