Now, ladies, we’re on the move all the time, every day. And not every journey happens with someone else accompanying you! So you need to know exactly what’s happening around you – whether it’s the route you’re taking, or what your travel options are – and how to be safe and secure at all times! That’s why we bring you the ultimate list of (free!) apps that every woman who travels alone should have. Go on, check them out and then hit download! Trust us, you’ll get more use out of them than the latest version of CandyCrush!

1. SafetiPin

This is the best possible app if you’re new to a town – whether you’re a tourist or have just moved cities. SafetiPin provides you with a map-based view of a locality, a city or the world – along with its safety score. The idea is to get to know a place better to stay safe! An area that has been marked potentially unsafe will show up with a red sign on your app. If you mark your “areas of interest”, the app also provides you with information about threats of harassment or general precautions that should be taken.

Available on: Android and iOS

2. Ola Cabs (And Autos!)

We know you know how to book a cab through the Ola app. But did you know of Ola Autos? Yup, just pay Rs 10 over and above your auto’s meter reading, and make the best of the convenience of calling an auto wherever you’d like! Just like Ola cab rides, your auto rides can be tracked too. So, send your trip details to a trusted contact before you set off – to be on the safer side!

3. Scream Alarm

This application basically has a click button, which when pressed, imitates the noise of a screaming woman at very, VERY high volume. So, at a time when your own lungs might fail you, you can rely on this app.

4. Pocket Conductor

First – it tells you everything from different routes you can take up to your set location to finding the nearest ATM to tracking your PNR status for a train. Second – it works brilliantly offline. Third – it lets you interact with other users on the app (for feedback/suggestions). What more could you possibly ask for? Downside – it’s only operational in Delhi as of now.

5. Police Nearby

This one is self-explanatory – the app detects your location and shows you a list of the police stations around you. The app is most useful in emergencies such as robbery or even Eve-teasing or harassment.

6. RedBus

Now, book bus tickets on the go with this handy app! The RedBus app lets you choose from AC, Non-AC, Sleeper et al types of buses to suit every budget, and provides you with customer ratings for each. Just select a boarding point and you’re good to go!

7. Glympse

It’s your basic GPS location tracker. Not only does this app work like a dream (even on 2G), it also lets a trusted contract track your location – if you let them – to get to you ASAP! This works especially well when you’re new to a city and don’t know how to direct people to get to your location. The best part – it’s not meant JUST for city use. Your family/friends can keep a track on you – again, if you let them – even on road trips or treks!

Available on: Android, iOS and Windows

8. MapMyIndia

Yes, we know you have Google Maps on your phone, but we also know how twisted it can make your journey sometimes – not to mention the resounding “GPS signal lost” voice message every now and then. Enter, MapMyIndia – it’s a GPS app, only better. It lets you track the exact location, up to the house number you’re looking for, and updates itself with every new development on the roads – be it that detour you’ll now have to take thanks to a flyover construction or a road that’s temporarily been closed (for whatever reason!).

Available on: iOS, Android and Windows

9. Ridlr

Think of this app as your travel assistant – it gives you EVERYTHING you need to know about public transport (bus, metro, train and monorail) in your city – Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Pune, Chennai, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Ahmedabad. So, you can keep a track on all the live updates, cancellations and change in timings according to your travel plan!

10. Raksha

There are a lot of women’s safety apps out there that offer to send your current location with a distress message to a couple of pre-assigned contacts, provided you have an internet connection on your phone. The way Raksha differs is that it sends a distress SMS to assigned contacts even without Internet. In fact, with Raksha, you don’t even have to unlock your phone. The app can send your location to your emergency contacts if you keep the volume button pressed for three seconds.

11. Delhi Auto Rickshaw Fare

This one’s self-explanatory. You get the correct calculation of fare once you put in the distance travelled. Don’t get put off by the word “Delhi” yet. You’ll find this app on the app store for all your respective cities. Get ready to fight with your auto-wala bhaiyya all the more now! 😀

12. Women’s Security

With this app, you can record a 45-second voice clip, which will be sent to your emergency contacts without any active interaction from your end. If you are in a no-reception range, the app sends the message as soon as a signal is available, making the app quite reliable.

13. Life360 Family Locator

Let’s just call this the “stalker app”! Life360 is a multipurpose app to stay in touch with your family and friends by letting you know their location at all times. The app lets you create circles, add people to them and see their locations on a confidential map. You can also share your location with them, or send an alert to your circle members if need be. You can even chat with your circle members for free!
