If there’s one thing that we’ve learnt in our battle against the coronavirus, it is to be prepared for the worst. Remember how we assumed that the pandemic was behind us when cases started declining late last year? Turns out we were all in for a shock. COVID-19 managed to take us all by surprise when it returned for a deadly second wave. Obviously, none of us were prepared for it and had to face harsh consequences.
Well, we hope everyone has learnt the lesson this time around, and we need to be extra careful about the future. Scientists are speculating that a third wave will hit us in the near future, and it would particularly be harmful to children. This is why we got in touch with Dr Manashree Sankhe, Lecturer, Dr D Y Patil Hospital Pune, who guided us about how to be prepared for it. Read on to find out how.
Vaccinate Yourselves ASAP
If you are still confused about getting the jab, then we hope that this will help. A study of COVID-19 data found that children are usually infected from adults, rather than vice versa. The solution? “Vaccination of parents makes absolute sense as research from Israel finds that getting vaccinated doesn’t just help protect the vaccinated individuals from COVID-19 but it also helps protect those around them who haven’t yet been vaccinated—including young kids,” says Dr Manashree.
Educate Your Children By Setting Examples
If your children have been hesitant about masks then now would be a good time to get them in the habit of wearing them the right way. Explain to your child the importance of wearing a mask and washing hands. “Ensure that you as parents are doing it right by wearing masks, practicing hand washing, maintaining physical distance, as your kids will only learn after seeing you,” imparts Dr Manashree.
Be Alert Of Your Children’s Symptoms
If you’re a parent or have kids in the house then it would be best to stay alert about any symptoms. “Keep track of any symptoms developing in the children and seek appropriate medical advice rather than try to self medicate,” advises Dr Manashree. Remember to always consult your doctor before treating any symptoms with home remedies or using OTC medicines.
Immunity Boosting Measures
It’s time to share your immunity boosters with your kids. The role of immunity boosting measures to prevent COVID-19 in children during the third wave is essential. “Plenty of fluid intake, consuming food rich in vitamins and minerals can promote immunity. Recent research suggests plant based foods increase the intestinal beneficial bacteria which are helpful and make up 85% of the immune system,” says Dr Manashree.
Also, breastfeeding would be advisable for infants as the benefits are well established and there is no evidence of COVID-19 virus being present in breastmilk yet.
We understand that times are tough and it’s okay to be worried for your kids. But remember to not panic and deal with the situation wisely. The best precaution would be to stay home and stay safe.
