We may not see a lot of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on the big screen but Festival de Cannes is the event that’s all about Aish. The actress has given us so many looks at the Cannes festival that are hard to forget. Remember her purple lipstick look? And the blue Cinderella gown?
But this year, Cannes hasn’t been so kind to Aishwarya. Or is it the other way round? We can’t tell. The Dhoom 2 actress’ red carpet looks have been disappointing us one outfit after another. Here’s a breakdown of all her looks so far:
1. Mermaid, You Said?
Her stylist wrote, “OG Red Carpet Queen” in praise of Aishwarya but we’re not sure we agree. She wore a gold-toned holographic six-layered train gown by Jean-Louis Sabaji Couture. The concept gown was one-shouldered and had a fish-scale texture all over it. Needless to say, it wasn’t received well by the audience.
But we do like the extra effort she took to add metallic gold shimmer to her earlobes. There’s an idea to take your OOTD from glam to ‘gram. Another thing we weren’t a fan of was how she kept her hair poker straight. It made the whole outfit look like a combination of lines segments – the six-layered train, the sharp neckline, the shoulder design and then the hair. It was all a bit much.
2. That’s A White…Something
In her second red carpet look, Aishwarya sported a custom-made couture look by Ashi Studio. This all-white gown had frills, feathers and a lot of fabulous fabric to process. She “floated down the Cannes red carpet on a dreamy cloud,” said the couturier describing the outfit. But did she really?
However, we are thankful she didn’t wear her signature blood-red lipstick with this one. Her makeup was kept natural with a peachy nude pout, dramatic lashes and silver eye shadow doing all the talking. All in all, the look didn’t feel balanced as it had a lot of statement-making elements. Everything was a distraction.
3. Denim-On-Denim Can Go Wrong
Those who say you can never go wrong with denim, here’s Aishwarya’s look to prove you wrong. She took the blue jeans-white shirt ensemble to the next level in custom Falguni Shane Peacock denim separates during press interactions. With high-waisted flared jeans, a white top tucked in and a floor-length jacket with matching embellishments, something felt wrong.
And there it is – the red lipstick. In fact, she wore red heels too! Combining dark blue and red is risky business. And this look just shows how not to pair the colours together. Also, we wish she had gotten rid of the gold nail polish after the first look.
4. There’s Waldo!
All this while, we have been looking for Waldo in the book when he’s right there! Aishwarya’s red and white striped dress by Leal Daccarett was a big womp womp for us. It reminded us of Waldo. And Christmas. And candy canes! Basically, the dress looked like a joke.
You are worth it, Aish. But this dress isn’t.
5. Why So Much Red, Rai?
This look didn’t go viral and the actress’ team should be thankful for it. There’s a lot of red happening here – heels, lipstick – and to top it off, there’s a vinyl jacket with solid red statement lapel. Why? Not to forget her Gucci buckled belt and flashy sunglasses. Pick your game, Mrs. Bachchan!
6. What Even?
Though we can’t see this entire outfit, this teal blue sculpted metal wire jacket set by Rimzim Dadu looks stunning. Looks like she paired their wrap-around cropped jacket with a matching off-shoulder top but, going by her fashion journey at this year’s Cannes, we’re not sure if it worked out well. Also, red lips are highly overdone now.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is at the 72nd edition of Cannes representing L’Oréal. Let’s see if she can still surprise us. Fingers crossed for the Miss World 1994.
