The pandemic has changed our relationship with makeup. Months have gone by since most of us have touched our makeup products, and judging by the way things are going, it’s going to be that way for a while. With nowhere to go and no one to meet, many of us aren’t wearing makeup. Even if we are, we’re keeping it to the bare minimum.
As the lockdown eases, restaurants, offices, malls and gyms are slowly opening up for business. People are bound to step out, and makeup will eventually make a comeback. However, when it does, expect your skin to act out. Skin purging is real, and it brings along two uninvited guests, zits and blemishes. This is just one scenario though; there are many reasons why your skin could be reacting to makeup. Let’s dig deeper.
5 Possible Reasons Why Your Skin Hates Makeup
Grab a pen and notebook, will you?
1. Face Masks & Makeup Don’t Go Together

Whenever we step out, we wear face masks to protect others and ourselves from coronavirus. However, shielding our mouths and noses with fabric is bound to make the enclosed area sweaty and sticky. If you’re wearing makeup, the products will not only stain the face mask, but will also decrease air filtration, making breathing difficult. Reusing the mask without washing it can deposit makeup residue back to your skin, and that can clog the pores and cause more breakouts. To keep acne at bay, it’s best to wear less makeup or no makeup at all when wearing a face mask.
2. You Don’t Have A Solid Skincare Routine In Place
Makeup looks best on healthy skin. One way to improve your skin’s texture is to follow a good skincare routine. You see, foundations, liquid blushes and highlighters, have the tendency to clog pores. When the pores are clogged, your skin starts to breakout. To prevent this from happening, follow a CTM routine. Exfoliation also helps to scrub off dead skin cells and keep the pores squeaky clean.
3. You’re Using Old & Expired Makeup Products

If you’ve not used your makeup for a while, chances are, some of them have already passed their shelf life. Due to the pandemic, many of our makeup products are just sitting on our shelves. The longer it sits, the closer it is to its expiry date. Hence, always check your makeup products before using them on your skin. A few ways to know when a product has passed its shelf life – there’s an evident change in colour and texture, formulas separate and the product smells off. That’s when you know that it’s time to chuck it into the bin.
4. Makeup Is Too Heavy For The Skin
Full-coverage products are a great way to cover up blemishes. However, they’re too heavy for the skin and when you wear a mask, the moisture that’s created in the enclosed space melts the makeup. To prevent this, change the formula of your makeup. Instead of liquid and cream makeup products, opt for powder formulas. Also, since face masks cover the bottom part of the face, the upper part of the face is open for eye makeup experiments.
5. You Never Moisturise Before Applying Makeup

Makeup looks terrible on dry skin. Always ensure that your skin is moisturised to the tea before you apply makeup on it. Remember this skincare routine order Cleanse>Exfoliate>Tone>Moisturise>Eye Cream>Serum>Face Oils.
These are 5 possible reasons why your skin hates makeup right now. If you still experience breakouts and inflammation after taking a break from makeup, you will have to loop in your dermatologist.
