The rape crises in India shows no signs of abating. In a shocking incident, a three-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped and beheaded by two men in Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur city. The body of the little girl was discovered by the police on Tuesday. What’s sending chills down our spine is the fact that one of the alleged killers, Rinku Sahu, himself is a father to three kids. And this father, according to reports, allegedly told the police that he along with another accomplice, Kailash Kumar gang-raped the three-year-old girl over one whole day and then strangled the toddler because she wouldn’t stop crying.
As per the latest reports by the investigating officers, the victim (girl) in this case was sleeping next to her mother at the Tatanagar railway station when she went missing. A CCTV footage showed a man, believed to be Rinku, walking away with the sleepy child in his arms. The security footage helped the police capture the main suspects.
What makes the situation worse is the fact that Rinku is a repeat sex offender, and has allegedly kidnapped and assaulted many children before. In fact, he was released from jail after doing time for kidnapping a child and attempting to kill her in 2015.
But, he got away lightly with all the previous crimes committed by him. According to reports, his mother who is a police constable helped him. Perhaps, that’s the reason Rinku was not afraid to commit one more horrifying criminal act, one more time.
This incident has shaken us to the core. We cannot even fathom the depravity and horror of this act.
The police are still probing the case based on the gathered evidence and investigating other men allegedly involved in the brutal incident. This case has sparked outrage among civilians who are praying for the deceased child and actively seeking justice for her. Every time such cases come to light, social media erupts with messages and we see protests in different parts of the country, but is anything really changing?
Imagine the plight of a mother who got to know that her missing daughter was raped, strangled and her corpse was mutilated. Can India sleep tonight?
For a nation that claims to be on an accelerated path towards development, we should contemplate on as to how far we’ve really come. According to a survey conducted by The Thomson Reuters Foundation in 2018, India was declared as the most dangerous country in the world to be a woman because of the high risk of sexual violence and assault. Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. Our country recorded 106 rapes per day in 2016 – a mammoth increase in crime against women despite the toughening of laws.
Where are we really safe? Can we send our children to school? Can we let them play in parks? Can we walk on the streets at night? Are we going to live in fear for our lives, our children’s safety all the time? HOW DO WE STOP THIS?
We need a judiciary system that delivers justice swiftly; we need police that’s more sensitised; and most of all, we need leaders who fight for what’s right. If we really want a #SwachchBharat, we need to put the culprits behind bars and make them stay there.
