As we navigate our lives through an abating pandemic, it is the occasional festivals every now and then that keep us going by lifting our spirits. Well, Eid is the next big festival and before we go into the details about how to celebrate Eid amid a pandemic, it sounds only fitting that we get well accustomed to the ideology behind this pious festival. 

Most of us know that there are not just one but two different Eids celebrated in Islam–Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha. The two festivals fall at two different but very important periods within the Islamic lunar calendar. How Is Eid-Al-Fitr Celebrated

Eid-Al-Fitr, the first Eid in the Islamic lunar calendar is celebrated to mark the end of Ramadan (the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.) Eid-Al-Fitr is the time of celebration for Muslims across the world and they observe the festival by gathering with their friends and family and thanking Allah for his blessings. Here are some of the Eid-Al-Fitr rituals that you should know about: 

-Individuals celebrating the festival make an obligatory donation. Some of them add on to the good deeds by volunteering for community service.

-Gifting is a huge part of the Eid rituals and thus friends and family buy gifts for another. Children are also showered with gifts and sweets on the occasion. 

-Muslims greet each other with ‘Eid Mubarak’ which refers to having an auspicious and blessed day.

-Those celebrating Eid-Al-Fitr dress up in new clothes and sit down with their families to have the first breakfast after a month of daylight fasting. 

-The Salaat ul-Fajr prayer takes place before dawn and then Salaat al-Eid takes place after sunrise. 

How to pray For Eid-ul-fitr

As Salaat al-Eid is performed only twice a year, the imam leads the congregation and explains each step. Wondering how to pray for Eid-Ul-Fitr? These are the steps that are generally followed:

-Start by specifying your intention (Niyyah) by saying “I intend to do two Rakat behind the Imam for Eid prayer along with six additional Takbeers.”

-For the first Takbir, follow the Imam and touch both your ears with your hands. Follow it by saying “Allahu Akbar.”

-For step 3, recite “Subhanaka”

-Again recite “Allahu Akbar” with the imam, and then you can let the hands down.

-Recite “Allahu Akbar” with the imam. Follow this by clasping the hands and then listen to the imam as they recite the Fatiha and a surah. Say “Ameen” once the Imam has finished the Fatiha.

-Go into the bowing position while saying “Subahaana Rabbiyal Azeem”

-When the Imam says “Sami Allahu liman Hamidah” stand up straight and recite “Rabbana lakal Hamd” 

-Go into your first Sajdah while saying “Subahaana Rabbiyal Aa’la”

-Now get up from the first Sajdah and transition into the jalsa position.

-Go into the second Sajdah position while saying “Subahaana Rabbiyal Aa’la”

How to perform eid-ul-fitr prayer at home

Wondering how to perform Eid-Ul-Fitr prayer at home this year? Well, the steps are almost similar to the Eid prayers at the mosque. However, here are few things that you should keep in mind: 

-There is no Eid khutbah (sermon) when you pray from home. 

-The correct time for the prayer would start 15 minutes after the sunrise.

The same is observed through a Qurbani which refers to sacrificing an animal. This is why the festival is also referred to as Bakra Eid. Here are all the Eid-Al-Adha rituals that you should know about: 
-All the family members perform Salah (Eid-Ul-Adha prayers) during all three days of Eid-Ul-Adha.

-Everyone wears new clothes and finery during the festival. 

-Those celebrating the festival can eat the breakfast only after their Eid prayer has been recited. Sheer Korma is served during breakfast. 

-In commemoration of Abraham’s sacrifice of his son Ishmael, domestic animals (goat, cow, sheep, or camel) are sacrificed after breakfast. 

-The meat of the sacrificed animal is then distributed among family members, friends, and underprivileged people.
