It is common knowledge that the skin under your eyes is very delicate and must be given TLC but did you know, as you age, that skin becomes thinner and loses volume? This thinning of the skin under your eyes can cause a shadow, making it look like you have dark circles. Dark circle treatment potions and cures make up a major chunk of the skincare market and for good reason. Who doesn't want to wake up looking refreshed and rejuvenated every day, right? But before knowing what treatment to go for, you need to at least understand the root of the problem. And to do that, you need to know which category your dark circles fall under.

If a brownish tint appears, it is likely that your dark cirles are of the pigmented variety.
This means that the skin under your eyes has thinned out. To remedy this, make sure you use a formula that boosts collagen production. "These can be caused by various factors like poor lifestyle choices like lack of sleep and fatigue," explains Dr Pankaj.
If your under-eye circles have a brownish tint, they are of the vascular variety.
These can be a result of many different factors from sun damage to ageing but are mainly hereditary. When exposed to the sun, your skin tends to produce more pigment which leads to darker under-eyes.
You need something that will brighten up your under eyes and for that, your best bet are ingredients like kojic acid and vitamin C. Kojic acid blocks skin from producing too much melanin, which in turns will prevent more pigmentation.
The structural build of your eyes can also cause it to look like you have dark circles.
For this type of under-eye darkness, your bone structure is to blame.
While there are limited things you can do at home to alter the darkness under your eyes, there are in-clinic options you can consider like fillers. But these will only temporarily fix things and retouching may be necessary from time to time!
For this mix of dark circles, you will have to double up on both serious lifestyle changes and skincare products. "Make sure you are getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night and that you are consuming a balanced diet. Load up on antioxidant-rich foods like tomatoes, carrots and spinach to repair signs of sun damage," explains Dr Pankaj.
When it comes to treating dark circles, none of the creams will do their work if you don't do yours. Making healthy life decisions (sleeping early, eating healthy and being gentle with your skin) is the way to go!
