The Fashion Designer With A Cause
Anita Dongre leads one of the biggest fashion brands in the country, making her the most powerful designer in the Indian fashion industry. Her company House Of Anita Dongre helms five labels--AND, Global Desi, Anita Dongre, Grassroot and jewellery line Pink City. Many prominent personalities have donned her outfits--from the Duchess of Cambridge to Beyonce.
This inspirational designer has shown us that a business can have several causes attached to it. The Anita Dongre Foundation develops livelihood opportunities for women in rural India by providing them with skill training. She is also a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and an advocate of veganism and sustainability. She has been the recipient of several laurels, including the Outstanding Entrepreneur - Fashion and Lifestyle Award at the Tiecon Awards in 2020.
Anita Dongre's 2020 Power Move
In a year of crisis, Anita Dongre used her fashion empire to empower and uplift artisans. As masks became mandatory in 2020, a shortage soon followed. To support India's fight against COVID-19, Dongre began the production of 7,000 masks each week to distribute to NGOs, village residents, individuals, and hospitals. In March 2020, Dongre became one of the first Indian designers to set up a 1.5 crore fund to cover medical emergencies for local artisans and small vendors and artisans working with her amid the outbreak. Under the Anita Dongre Foundation, 24 women employees worked in tailoring units to produce reusable masks for medical staff and the community at large. And while other businesses were compelled to cut costs, Dongre made a bold move and opened a new flagship store in Hyderabad in 2020.
