2020 has taken away a lot from us–from the tragic demise of actors Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor to Chadwick Boseman— we mourned many untimely deaths this year. And now, on December 3, the nation witnessed another tragic loss – Mahashay Dharmpal Gulati, popularly known as the MDH Uncle, is no more. The 98-year-old Padma Bhushan laureate passed away due to cardiac arrest this morning.

MDH Uncle had become a household name with his age-old trusted spice brand, MDH, and hence, his sudden demise seems like a personal loss to all the Indians. Late Dharmpal Gulati was unwell and hospitalised for the past three weeks. The legendary entrepreneur’s death has left the country in shock and Twitterati came forward to bid farewell to him.

We doubt that there would be any Indian who does not know the MDH jingle by heart!

While a lot of us know Late Mr Gulati as the founder of MDH, his real-life story is truly inspiring and overwhelming. Mahashay Dharmpal Gulati dropped out of school at a very young age and tried his luck in the trade business. His family lost everything during the partition of India in 1947 and he was only left with the spice business established by his father – Mahashian di Hatti – that later came to be known as MDH.
