This Is What Really Happens To Your Skin When You Stop Wearing Makeup

There was a time when I would wear makeup to work every single day. All of that came to a sudden halt when the pandemic hit and my workstation moved from the office to my home. With nowhere to go and no one to meet, I rarely wore makeup at home (unless it was for a virtual happy hour sesh with my friends) The first month of wearing no makeup felt a bit odd. My acne marks were visible, my lips were bare and the fake rosy hint of colour was absent from my cheeks.

And now that wearing a face mask has become part of my reality, makeup for me took a back seat. Since face masks would often leave my skin dry and flaky, I began focusing more on skincare. I think that the first step to achieving great skin is acceptance. For those of you who can relate, here are 5 things that you’ve probably noticed about your skin after you stop wearing makeup.

Your Pores Can Happily Breathe Again!

Heavy base makeup products like primers, foundations and concealers, tend to clog the pores and cause breakouts. Taking a break from them will give your pores a chance to breathe again. Sticking to a tinted moisturiser or BB cream instead is a far better option. Since you’re not or hardly wearing any makeup these days, you’re also less likely to experience flare-ups.

The Skin Rebalances Itself

Blushes, foundations, highlighters all of these makeup products make your skin look flawless on the surface level. Under all of that makeup though, it’s your skin that suffers the most. Wearing too much makeup (especially matte) can dry out the skin and disrupt its hydration and natural oil balance. If you stop wearing makeup every day, your skin will slowly start to heal and become balanced once again.

Your Skin Has Less Contact With Bacteria

Dirty beauty tools and old makeup products are breeding grounds for bacteria. Sometimes washing your beauty tools and brushes aren’t enough to get rid of all the bacteria on them, you should learn how to sanitize them. Staying away from everything related to makeup cuts down your risk of experiencing breakouts and infections.

Your Lashes Will Look Healthier & Thicker

A good mascara product will make your eyes look more awake, and your lashes look voluminous and longer. However, a low-quality mascara can cause the lashes to clump together and cause breakage. By taking a break from mascara and just using an eyelash serum will ensure the growth of healthy, thick lashes.

Your Fine Lines Will Be Less Visible

Powder makeup helps to give sheer coverage to the skin and is a miracle product for oily skin types. However, they do tend to settle in the fine lines and wrinkles, thus making them more visible and attracting unwanted attention. Plus, removing makeup is another hassle. The tugging and pulling involved in removing makeup can affect the elasticity of the skin and cause premature ageing.

If in between you feel that you need to go back to wearing makeup, but all means do so. However, don’t neglect your skincare routine. For the glow to return, continue to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise your skin regularly. After all, makeup looks best on healthy skin.
