Dark 

 

 

Don’t even think of scrolling through your phone when watching this one. And that’s simply because to understand this complex sci-fi web series on Netflix, you will want all hands on deck. A German original, the series ran through three seasons, narrating a complicated fictional take on time travel. Set in a small town called Winden, Dark takes viewers through the lives and difficulties of its many characters and how the handful of families that reside there are more interconnected than one could think. Revolving around the Kahnwald, Nielsen, Doppler, and Tiedemann families, the series runs in three timelines in different years—2019, 1986 and 1953. A take on time travel like never before, you will want to know all the possible theories once you begin.

Black Mirror  

 

 

The makers of this sci-fi web series have taken it upon themselves to forecast the perils of technology and boy, it will leave you reeling for days. Each episode is unique, meaning you don’t have to watch in any specific order. All of them relay the underlying theme of tech, gadgets, apps and how a dependency on them leads to crises. The dystopian, fictional series by Charlie Brooker also gave way to a ‘choose your own adventure’ film titled Bandersnatch, whose plot also revolved around the same overarching theme, with multiple endings and stories involved based on what the viewer chose.

Outlander 

 

 

A sci-fi web series that is made on the theme of time travel? Sign us right up! The story follows Clare Randall who, after World War II, travels to Scotland with her husband, a historian. In a strange occurrence at the Craigh na Dun rocks, she finds herself transported to 1743. The customs and traditions of the past aren’t all that she has to soak in; her identity and the fact that she accidentally time-travelled is also to remain hidden. A nurse by profession, Clare starts to lead her life by helping others but in a turn of events, the only way to survive is to marry Jamie Fraser, a Scot she soon falls head over heels in love with. Spanning over many years as she is forced to choose and travel back to her world once again, Outlander, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, marries romance, drama and science fiction to present a spellbinding show.

The Umbrella Academy 

 

 

Based on the comic book series by Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy is one of the best science fiction web series to watch. Surprisingly, all of them have superpowers of their own and when six of them come together under the same roof after several years, distinctive personalities and family drama make up for quite some clash.

Gotham 

 

 

If you are a long-time Batman fan, this one is worth a watch. Though more action and crime and less science-fiction, Gotham does have its moments of the genre. For one, you will get the backstory on how Bruce Wayne became the way he did, exploring the billionaire’s life as a child. It also introduces detective James Gordon, who is solving the murder of Bruce’s parents, along with a slew of villains who are thriving in Gotham city. A thriller+ sci-fi web series that explores the superhero’s prior life, Gotham will keep you busy.

Watchmen 

 

 

A must-watch, this sci-fi series on Hotstar is based on the eponymous 1986 version by DC Comics. Set in a dystopian world while drawing from instances that happened in history, the limited drama series begins with scenes from the Tulsa Massacre, before going on to move towards present day and age, and the rise of white supremacy. When the entire police force of the city is targeted by a racist group of supremacists called the Seventh Kavalry, the government reforms laws for police to hide their faces. Between the rising wave of polarisation, constant attacks and vigilantes, a detective tries to solve the murder of the police chief but there is more than what meets the eye. With a number of awards and accolades under its belt, the sci-fi meets drama series will keep you glued till the very end.

Westworld

 

Spanning different timelines, this show tops most of the sci-fi web series list, thanks to its engaging and unique plot. Arnold Weber and Robert Ford work as partners, creating a distinct theme park that humans can visit. The ones who run it are the hosts or robots, who are created by the two partners and unknown to them, run on the whims of their creators. Soon, chaos erupts when the robots begin to sense things and gain ‘consciousness’. A dystopian show that will keep you hooked, Westworld is much like a puzzle that goes on.
