Healthy Locks For The Win! How To Choose The Best Essential Oil For Your Hair Type

Healthy Locks For The Win! How To Choose The Best Essential Oil For Your Hair Type

If we can pamper our skin with hydrating face masks, expensive serums and high-quality moisturisers, why can’t we do the same for our hair? Investing in hair packs and essential oils will nourish the scalp and nurse damaged hair strands back to health.

Speaking of essential oils, if you do end up including them in your hair care routine, your locks will immensely benefit from them. You see, all essential oils are made from highly concentrated liquid plant extracts. Each essential oil is unique and targets different hair concerns. Since they are quite powerful, you need to dilute them with other carrier oils or haircare products like your shampoo and conditioner. Whether you’re dealing with hair fall, greasy hair or an itchy scalp, there is a specific essential oil product for your hair concern.

How To Choose The Best Essential Oil For Your Hair Concern

Happy hair days ahead, ladies!

Lavender – For Scalp Acne & Dandruff

Lavender essential oil is loved for its antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. Not only does its scent make you feel relaxed and calm, but it also makes your hair smell divine. Add 3-4 drops of it into your hair mask and apply it to damp hair. After 10-15 minutes, wash it off with lukewarm water. A few reasons to love lavender essential oil – it soothes itchiness on the scalp, improves blood circulation in the scalp and balances pH levels of the scalp.

Rosemary essential oil does two things – promotes hair growth and soothes inflammation on the scalp. While it destroys bacteria and fungi on the scalp, it also helps to prevent premature greying and baldness. The beauty of rosemary essential oil is that it can be used on all hair types. Mix a few drops of this essential oil with almond or coconut oil to reap its benefits.

Ylang Ylang – For Dry Scalp

This floral and fruity essential oil is a fantastic hair care product for conditioning the hair and hydrating a dry scalp. Believe it or not, but ylang ylang helps to clean the scalp from dirt, fungus, oil and product residue. If you suffer from scalp acne or eczema, this essential oil will provide your scalp with instant relief. Mix a few drops of it with your hair oil for softer locks and a healthier scalp.

Tea tree oil not only helps to treat acne on the face but the scalp as well. While it unclogs hair follicles, it also treats dandruff, acne and inflammation on the scalp. It’s loved for its anti-fungal properties and protects the hair from environmental stresses like air pollution. For dandruff-free hair, mix this essential oil with almond oil and apply it on your hair and scalp. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water.

Clary Sage – For Stronger Hair

The smell of sage helps to relieve anxiety and stress. Since clary sage has linalyl acetate, it promotes hair growth by making the locks stronger. If you want to make your locks shiny, feel free to mix clary sage with lavender essential oil and almond hair oil. Keep it on for 10-15 minutes and wash your hair with lukewarm water. These oils will improve the texture of your locks, and make them grow back stronger and shinier!

Note: Always do a patch test on your skin before applying any essential oil directly on your scalp. Don’t apply essential oils directly to your hair or skin. It is essential that you dilute them with a carrier oil before applying. If you experience itchiness or an allergic reaction, wash the oil off immediately with lukewarm water. If there’s no itchiness, then it’s safe to use.
