Smooth, soft skin – that’s the dream! In a world filled with endless skincare products that help fight acne, eliminate rough textures and bring back your radiant glow, it’s safe to say that achieving smooth skin in 2020 is not impossible. While there are a few who are blessed with naturally smooth skin *clearly God’s favourite*, for most of us, achieving this enviable epidermis requires following a strict skincare regimen and watching what we put in our body.
And we hate to break it to you, this is a never-ending process. Since our skin is continuously evolving, from teen acne to dealing with early signs of ageing while also adding in external stressors, our skincare routine needs to change as well in order to keep up.
Many factors result in rough, textured skin. Some of the main culprits include pollution, age, dirt, debris and sun damage along with other issues like eczema, ichthyosis, keratosis pilaris and psoriasis. All these factors combined can take a toll on the superficial layer of the skin, leaving it rough, and more prone to wrinkles, age spots and sagging. Keep in mind that once we cross the age of 25, our collagen production in the body, which helps keep the skin supple and taut decreases. Along with this, dead skin cells, usage of wrong skin care products, lack of exfoliation can all lead to a rough and dry texture.
Some of the common signs of rough skin include uneven colour, acne, large pores, wrinkles, scars, and dry skin.
You need to understand that it’s not only about using the right products. To maintain healthy skin as you grow older, you need to take proper care and look after it diligently in order for it to thrive. So, along with your skincare products, you also need to watch what you eat and never leave the house without sunscreen. While the last few months of quarantine taught us how to build a proper skincare routine, we’ve noted down some additional pointers that will speed up the process and help you achieve smooth, radiant skin in no time.
No matter how many times you hear this, it never gets old --- you need to consume more water. Consuming at least 3 litres of water a day can help clear out your skin from within. The water keeps your skin hydrated and plump while flushing out the skin-damaging toxins. Along with water, you need to add fruits to your diet as well. Instead of munching on chips or other junk food, switch it up with fruits that are rich in micronutrients and antioxidants. We understand this can be a difficult task, but trust us, it’ll be worth it.
We can’t stress enough on this point. Cleansing your face twice a day and exfoliating your skin once a week is key to achieving smooth skin. This process helps eliminate any dead skin cells or dirt that has settled on the epidermis, leaving you with radiant, glowing, acne-free skin.
When it comes to exfoliating, you could either do it at home by using scrubs and face masks or visit the dermat once a month for in-office treatments like chemical peel treatments, microdermabrasion or laser skin resurfacing.
Believe it or not, putting your body through a rigorous workout can actually be beneficial for the skin. Exercise not only makes you look and feel healthier, but it also leaves your skin with an envious glow. This is because a good workout encourages more blood to be pumped through the veins, adding more micronutrients and healing properties to the facial skin. Meanwhile, sweating purges the pores of bacteria, dirt, oils and impurities. So, go on and dust of your jogging shoes if you want to achieve smooth, enviable skin.
Just make sure you cleanse and tone your skin after to get rid of any sweat build up!
Acne can be quite troublesome when it follows you into adulthood. If you have to deal with a new pimple popping up on the skin every month, you need to invest in good acne treatment. Along with your regular skincare routine, it’s beneficial to add anti-acne products that specifically target these pesky little zits and keep them at bay for good.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, under no circumstances do you leave your house without SPF. If you want smooth skin, you need to take the necessary precautions to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays all year round.
