In simple terms, most people use a lip liner to define their lips. So, if that’s your only goal, you should definitely go for a lip liner that matches your lipstick. But if you wish to create a gradient on your lips, or an ombre effect, go for a contrasting lip liner shade.
Should my lip liner be lighter or darker than the lipstick?
Again, it depends on the look you’re going for. If you wish to add more depth or gradient to your lips, use a slightly darker shade to outline your lips. If doing an ombre lip is on your mind, then use a darker, but a similar shade to outline your lips and fill in the centre of your lips with a lighter shade. Use your fingers to dab it all.
