Miracle In A Bottle: Paula Begoun Shares Why You Should Bless Your Skin With Jojoba Oil

At this point, there's no shortage of skincare oils available in the market for you to slather on your pretty face. Lemon oil, tea tree oil, maruna oil, argan oil, buckthorn oil--there are so many options to choose from. But here's the thing, not every type of oil is meant to be applied on your face as each type has its own set of benefits which makes them unique. When it comes to choosing a facial oil for you that would tick off all the things you'd want in your holy grail, jojoba oil takes the trophy!

We got in touch with Paula Begoun aka The Cosmetics Cop and fabulous founder of Paula's Choice Skincare who shares her insight on why using jojoba oil on your skin is the best thing you can do for your skin. She strongly believes that skincare and cosmetics should be based on the ingredients that have been subjected to peer-reviewed research and we totally agree.

What Is Jojoba Oil?

If you've never heard about jojoba oil and its skincare benefits, let Paula break it down for you. "Jojoba oil is a non-fragrant plant oil that can either be helpful or a hindrance, depending on your skin type. Its texture is similar to the oil (sebum) human skin produces, which is why it’s a brilliant ingredient for dry skin but potentially problematic for those with oily skin prone to clogged pores and breakouts," says Paula. Basically, be mindful about your skin type before adding this oil to your routine.

How Does Jojoba Oil Help Our Skin?

Facial oils are usually recommended to people who have really dry skin due to their hydrating properties. If you too have dry skin, Paula suggests you should definitely give jojoba oil a try. She says, "For dry skin, jojoba oil can provide emollience that makes skin feel moisturized, soft, and smooth. It’s also a rich source of beneficial fatty acids and can deliver a skin-soothing effect. Jojoba oil has the distinction of feeling lighter and less greasy than many other oils, particularly highly saturated oils such as coconut. Jojoba oil is also one of the more stable plant oils in use today."

Although we might think facial oils can reduce and tackle dryness completely, but that's hardly the case. "Keep in mind plant oils should never be relied on as the sole ingredient to save dry skin. Dry skin needs replenishment from many other types of ingredients including antioxidants, hydrating ingredients, and other fundamental substances skin lacks due to sun damage, pollution damage, and age." According to her, your facial oils should never replace your moisturiser. "Non-fragrant plant oils are better off used in tandem with a well-formulated moisturizer, so you get both anti-aging and skin-restoring ingredients along with the emollient properties of the plant oil," Paula adds.

Jojoba Oil For Hair

Ever wondered what this miraculous oil has in store for your hair? Allow Paula to shed some light on that.

"There’s really nothing special about jojoba oil for hair. Any non-fragrant plant oil from canola oil to safflower oil and avocado oil can be helpful for very thick dry hair. Using plant oils on hair has to be done carefully because overdoing it ends up making hair feel greasy and makes it look matted instead of soft and flowing," she says. Well, who would've thought!

She also adds that you cannot repair hair damage, ever. When your hair is dead you cannot repair it, the same way you cannot bring back a leaf to its life after falling off a tree. But what you can do is make your hair 'feel' repaired and that's the best you can do.

There you have it. Everything you need to know about the benefits of jojoba oil. Are you excited to add it to your skincare routine?
