Wow, we're already halfway through 2020 and it just baffles me that summer passed us by and and the humid monsoons have arrived. If there's one thing I'm missing--apart from meeting my friends, moving around wherever I wish, and just being out there in the great big outdoors--it's my spa appointments. During these past four months, I've done it all- DIY skincare, natural hair masks, tried waxing at home, tried shaving my face for the first time but I still miss my monthly pamper session at the salon.
So, if you think your skin needs some extra TLC, then we've got the perfect solution--an at-home facial. Now, one thing to remember is that you can't just follow your daily skincare routine because that's not special, you've got to amp it up, add a few steps and create a soothing environment to get the whole spa-like experience.
When we talk about bringing the spa home, you've also got to create a relaxing ambiance at home. This may just seem like a small step but is actually a very important one when we're looking to unwind and making the facial a much better one. Take a long bath with bath salts or if you don't want to go through that process, just dip your feet in warm water to instantly put you at ease. You can light a candle in your room and put on a relaxing playlist and get ready to get started.
Before you do anything else starting with a clean canvas is important. Remove all the makeup remnants from your face and double cleanse your skin if required. You can cleanse with an oil-based cleanser first and then go in with a more de-greasing cleanser. Make sure to take your time in doing this process because you want to draw out pollutants, impurities, and sebum too.
Steaming your face really helps open up pores and soften the top layer of your skin to prime it for exfoliation. However, when you're doing this process at home, make sure don't over steam it because it could lead to dry skin. To do this process safely you can hover your face over a bowl of hot water, cover your head with a towel and let the steam in. You can even soak the towel completely in water and put it over your face just making sure the water isn't too hot to burn you.
Exfoliating your skin gets rid of all the dead skin cells accumulated on your top layer to bring your naturally radiant skin into focus. Using an exfoliator opens up your pores and improves your skin's texture. Focus this on problem areas like the T-zone and your chin, which may have more oily and clogged pores than the rest of your face. Use a peel, chemical exfoliator or a scrub for this step.
A facemask is obviously a must in any at-home facial but we recommend using something with detoxifying ingredients that will help clean out your pores. So go with a clay mask or a charcoal mask since your pores will be open after exfoliating. One thing to try is to gently massage in the mask on your skin instead of just slathering it on. Leave it on for 15-20 mins because you've got all the time in the world these days and do some relaxing activity like focussed breathing, concentrating on relaxing sound waves etc while the mask is drying.
Moisturising your skin well is the key to getting that radiance and glow. After removing the face mask, gently moisturise your skin using your favourite serum and moisturiser. You can even mix a few drops of the serum into the moisturiser.
While using the face oil or the moisturiser, make sure to massage your skin well. Start with tapping your fingers all over your face to warm-up and relax your facial muscles then massage your forehead with zigzag patterns and then stretch your skin in the opposite direction to release muscle tension. Then you can massage around your eyes with your ring finger very gently. Massage your cheeks in a circular motion to increase blood flow. Drain your toxins to your lymph nodes which are located under your chin and neck so massage your face from the center to cheekbones.
To amp it up, use facial tools like a jade roller or a gua sha to reduce puffiness and signs of fatigue.
You've had an almost one hour (if not more) long relaxing experience, and now its time to just revel in the endorphins that have been released. So, lie down and enjoy your me-time because god knows, you deserve it!
