DIY With Dr Kiran: Learn How To Make Your Own Vitamin C Serum & Other Cult Products

When I was a child, I would mix two or more ingredients to make a brand new beauty product. Not much has changed in my late 20s. Whenever I get the time, I use what’s lying around in the kitchen to make DIY face packs, soaps and serums. I find this activity to be therapeutic and quite enjoyable. I understand that making products from scratch may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s no harm in giving it a try, right? With the lockdown still in effect, most of us are running out of skincare stash. Unsure when we’ll be able to stock up again, we can all use this time to seek inspiration from Dr Kiran Sethi of Isya Aesthetics

Her feed on the ‘Gram is flooded with all sorts of wonderful and helpful beauty content. She just started a new series which we absolutely love! It is called ‘How To Make Your Own’. It basically involves learning how to make iconic skincare products at home, using all-natural ingredients!

This is going to be fun!

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

This beauty brand is loved all over Japan and this product, in particular, is perhaps loved a little more. Each pretty bottle is packed with 90% concentration of an active ingredient called Pietra (a natural probiotic for the skin) This essence must be applied to fresh, clean skin and does a fantastic job at keeping the blemishes, dryness and wrinkles at bay. According to Dr Kiran, here’s how you can make it at home.

  • Cook rice as you normally would, and simply adjust the rice to water ratio so that there will be enough water leftover to use as a cleanser.
  • Once you’ve finished cooking, drain the water into a pot or bowl, and let it sit for one day at room temperature to ferment.
  • When it starts to turn slightly sour (that means it’s fermented), boil the water to stop the fermentation process, and let it cool.

And that’s how you make homemade PITERA, this can be used as a toner, hair rinse and face water rinse.

The Ordinary Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate Solution 20% in Vitamin F

This cult product is basically a serum that can be used in the day and at night. The key vitamin here is C that does an effective job at preventing premature ageing and brightening the skin tone. Why use this on your skin? Dr Kiran answers, “Vitamin F is essential fatty acids or Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids that help rebuild the skin barrier- making skin healthier, more hydrated, more supple and stronger! Vitamin C is for glow, antioxidant boost, brightening, collagen boosting and anti-pigmentation!”

To Make Vitamin F You Need:

  • Alpha-linoleic acid, which is an Omega 3 fatty acid
  • Linoleic acid, which is an Omega 6 fatty acid

To Make Alpha-linolenic Acid:

  • Crush and press oil out of chia seeds, walnuts or flaxseeds
Hack: if you can’t make the oil- just soak, peel then crush.

To Make Linoleic Acid:

  • Use almond oil, grapeseed oil or egg yolk
  • Mix 2 parts alpha-linoleic acid to 1 part linoleic acid
  • And voila you have a Vitamin F “serum” made at home!

To Make Vitamin C

  • Juice Amla or Moringa- these natural elements are easily available in India and chock full of Vitamin C.

To Make Your DIY The Ordinary Vitamin C and Vitamin F Serum:

  • Mix 1 part amla juice to 4 parts Vitamin F that you made earlier and you have a 20% vitamin C serum for your home beauty pleasure.

It’s as simple as that!

Vitamin C Serum

By stimulating the growth of collagen, Vitamin C helps to prevent premature ageing. It helps to brighten and clear out your skin from blemishes. In place of a Vitamin C serum, Dr Kiran suggests using amla juice. Apparently, amla has about 600-700 mg of ascorbic acid. Here’s the recipe

  • Mix amla juice with water
  • For that extra dose of moisture add honey or glycerin
  • Apply it on your face and voila! There’s your homemade vitamin C serum.

Remember to apply Vitamin C serum in the morning because it neutralizes free radicals during the day.
