#HomemadeBeauty: Here’s How I Removed My Gel Nail Polish At Home

One of the first things that I do at the beginning of the month is book a gel manicure appointment. I’m addicted to gel nails and I’m a sucker for trying every colour under the rainbow! I don’t really know how to describe this feeling, but whenever I look at my nails, seeing them glossy and in shape, makes me happy. Also, in case you’re wondering, this is how my gel nail polish looks right now.

My favourite gel nail colour at the moment is rose pink. I got my nails painted this colour a day before Christmas. Thankfully, my nails haven’t chipped, but as you can see, they have grown in length. In a nutshell, they’ve done their time and now, I need to remove them. I usually get my gel nail polish removed at the nail salon itself, but today, I felt like making a penny-wise decision. I decided to remove my gel polish at home.

‘Coz come to think of it, most nail salons in India charge a good amount of money JUST to remove gel polish. Talking money, salons charge anywhere between Rs. 200-500 Rs to remove gel polish. My question to you is – why would you spend so much money to remove gel polish when you can the same at home?

Here’s How To Remove Your Gel Nail Polish At Home

I’m not going to sugarcoat this – it is a time-consuming task, but with patience and skill, I’m sure that you would be able to do a fantastic job! Ready to give it a shot? Okay, let’s quickly make a checklist of all the things you would need first.

  • Cotton
  • Coarse nail file
A nail file anywhere between 80-100 grit is what you need for the removal of gel nail polish and acrylic nails.
  • Acetone
For removal of gel nails, acetone works better and faster than nail polish remover. Look for the acetone you can buy at the chemist.
  • Aluminium foil
Cut up the aluminium foil into small squares. The idea is to wrap each piece around your finger, so cut the pieces to about 4-5 inches in width
  • Buffing block
  • Cuticle pusher

4 Easy Steps To Remove Gel Nail Polish

Step 1: Use a coarse nail file to buff off the top layer of your gel manicure. Buff from left to right.

Step 2: Soak the cotton pieces in acetone and place it on your nail. Now use the tin foil and wrap it around each finger. (The aluminium foil helps to keep the cotton in one place)

Step 3: After 10-15 minutes, remove the foil and cotton and later, use a cuticle nail pusher tool to gently scrape off the softened gel polish.

Step 4: For smooth and shiny nails, use a buffing block like the one that I’ve used. And that’s it, you’re done!
