Wearing Your Summer Staples In Winter Is The New ‘IT’ Girl Approved Trend

My relationship with fashion has been a love and hate one—we’re currently very much in love. But more than a decade ago, my fashion vocabulary was limited to jeans and sweatshirts. This hate phase involved unfit trousers, hand-me-down sweaters (my mum was to blame) and ballet flats that were an eyesore.

Cut to today, our love affair is strong. My cupboards (all four of them) are filled with dresses, skirts, structured tops, trousers in every shade possible, and more to spare. I know what you’re thinking, that’s a whole lot of wardrobe for little old me. But, the truth is, if you were to do an inspection, you’d find trousers from six years ago, as well as six days ago. I have to admit, I haven’t been able to completely overcome my shopping habit, but I do know how to reuse and rewear—to the point of complete wear and tear.

Which is why, unlike most, my cupboard doesn’t go through a seasonal spring cleaning. As far as I’m concerned, my summer wardrobe and winter wardrobe is a giant treasure trove of ̓Gram-worthy looks. And as luck would have it, one of the winter 2020s ‘IT’ girl-approved looks includes a summer mainstay—the slip dress.

The trick, however, to take this easy, breezy piece into the colder climes is layering. Over a sweater, under a sweater, monotone, paired with trench coats, the sartorial possibilities are endless. But my personal favourite is the dress and sweater combo. I’ve sported quite a few this season, including this iteration today.

A Little Goes A Long Way

I won’t lie, I’ve been working in fashion for a while now, so I know my way around the block. But the mantra that I’ve followed to the tee is ‘a little goes a long way’. For today’s look, I paired a plain white sweater with a powder blue slip dress and bright blue trench coat. And considering it’s still cold out, I decided to pair my look with my favourite sneakers. The look finished off with layered necklaces, a basic pair of hoots, and statement rings to match.

Frow-Approved For The Win

Scroll through my Instagram and you’ll see that I have saved collections distinguished according to category. Inspiration for #OOTDs, Hair, Nails, and Decor are just a few of the bookmarked images that my Instagram is filled with. But, here’s the common denominator—they’ve all been spotted on the feeds of fashion frontrunners like Alexa Chung, Aimee Song, and more.

That’s also where I discover 2020 renditions of trends gone by. Like the layered slip dress. If Instagram is anything to go by, this season, street style stars are particularly fond of the dress and sneakers combo, and are also gravitating towards a more sorbet palette.

And scroll down their feeds and you’ll realise that they too repeat their looks. Sustainability is the need of the hour, so before you go out and stock up on oversized jumpers, knitted dresses and more for next season, might we suggest giving a second look to your summer wardrobe and having some fun?
