Too Young To Turn Old: Here’s EVERYTHING You Need To Know About Crepey Skin

My worst nightmare is having crepey skin in my 30s. That actually could become a reality if I don’t start taking care of my skin in my 20s. For those who don’t know what this term really means, allow me to explain. When your skin begins to look thin, wrinkled and a lot like crepe paper, that’s when you know, you have crepey skin. It happens to more women than men. It occurs due to loss of elasticity and once it gets stretched, it’s quite difficult for the skin to regain its youthful state again.

Causes of Crepey Skin

Now that you know what the term means, I bet you must be eager to know what are the causes of Crepey skin. Let’s find out, shall we?

It has to do with ageing

No one gets through life without ageing. It’s a natural process that happens to everyone. The older you grow, your skin will have a tough time repairing and reproducing skin structures. A few factors that could be ageing you faster right now are poor diet, lack of sleep, no exercise, smoking, too much caffeine, sun exposure, not drinking enough of water, constant stress and smoking. Also, take it from me, never leave the house without wearing sunscreen!

Hello, sunshine

If you sit in the sun for too long, you’ll get hit by the harmful UV rays. 7-10 am is fine to step out, but not after. You should try to stay indoors till 4 pm because that’s the time when the sun’s rays are the strongest and most dangerous. Please understand that UV rays damage skin structures like elastic fibres and collagen. The target areas include – face, upper chest, forearms, neck and hands.

Blame it on your genetics

If it runs in the family, there’s a huge possibility that you may have it too. That’s how genetics work anyway. It passes down from one generation to the other.

Living with dry skin

As you age, your skin’s oil glands do not produce as many natural oils as it used to in the past. Which is why I urge and encourage you to moisturise your skin as and when you get the chance. Moisturising your skin when it’s damp, locks the product in for a longer time.

Smoking and pollution are a deadly combo

As it is, smoking is harmful to your lungs as well as your skin. It does no good and it’s never too late to stub that bud. While you can avoid smoking, pollution is something, you don’t have any control of. If you live in a polluted city, always step out of your home wearing a mask.  The mask will protect you from inhaling dust, pollution and harmful fumes in the air.

Losing weight instantly

If you lose weight at an abnormally rapid speed, your skin is bound to sag. You can either wait it out for the skin to repair itself or for a quicker solution, you may have to go through surgery just so they can remove all that excess skin. I think the first option is better.

Lack of sleep

No beauty sleep, no beauty – simple! The less amount of sleep you get, the more fine lines show up on your face. Lack of sleep ages the skin and affects the moisture levels and lowers your complexion’s pH levels. Hence, instead of waking up to glowing skin, you wake up to dull and tired skin.

Poor food choices

If your diet only includes meat and dairy, you will fall victim to crepey skin. Include leafy veggies and fruits into your diet. This will help you get your share of vitamins and minerals. If you’re a hardcore nonvegetarian, try dedicating one day only to veggies. Make it a habit to eat clean and healthy.

Treatments For Crepey Skin

Before you undergo any treatment for crepey skin, make sure that you run it by your dermatologist first. That way, you’ll know that you’re making the right skin decision.

Try A Chemical Face Peel

A solution is applied to your face. This will cause your surface skin to peel and when it does, a smoother and softer layer of skin will appear. This fresh layer will appear less wrinkled and dull post the peel. However, you need to go for multiple treatments for this to take effect.

Or Microdermabrasion…

Your skin is first rubbed with an abrasive sanding wheel and then, dead cells are sucked out from your skin. Your skin may look pink and feel tingly, but that’s okay. You still need to undergo multiple treatments to view results.

Botox

Only get botox done if it’s your choice. Botox helps to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles around your eyes and lips. In case you want to know more about botox, then I suggest that you click here and read all about it.

Fillers

If there’s a particular area of skin that needs to get filled out, you can opt for fillers. Also, if you’re worried about wrinkles, crows feet and fine lines, this skin treatment will solve all those problems.

Heard of Lasers and Ultrasounds?

You have to give lasers and ultrasound treatments a shot if you want youthful-looking skin. Although both these treatments can be time-consuming, you must be patient. Do you know what else helps to improve crepey skin? Blepharoplasties, neck and facelifts. Before opting for any treatment, you must take an opinion from your dermatologist.

Simple Ways To Prevent Crepey Skin

Drink Plenty of Water

The more water you drink, the better for you. Water helps with smooth metabolism, maintains blood pressure, boosts skin’s health, forms saliva and mucus. The most important thing it does is it keeps your skin hydrated and healthy.

What food you should be eating?

Any food that is loaded with vitamins, antioxidants and Omega 3 fatty acids, you should be consuming for youthful skin. Berries, carrots, spinach, tomatoes. And for meat, get your protein from fish. It’s also easier for your body to digest.

Exfoliate Skin with olive oil and sugar

While the sugar crystals help to scrub off dead skin cells, olive oil keeps it moisturised and nourished. It’s a great alternative to using commercial skin exfoliators. Those things are always loaded with chemicals and preservatives.
