10 Fun Things To Do In Mumbai That Won’t Cost You A Single Rupee!

10 Fun Things To Do In Mumbai That Won’t Cost You A Single Rupee!

One thing that I love about Mumbai is that this city does not distinguish between the rich and the poor. Everyone is welcome to call this place home. Out of the plenty of experiences that Mumbai has to offer, some of them are absolutely free! (Yeah, you heard right, FREE) You don’t have to spend a single penny from your pocket to visit and enjoy these places. Where are they, you ask? Read on to find out!

1. Sleep Under The Stars At Marine Drive

I hate the place during the day. It is hot, crowded and super noisy. However, I look forward to spending time here at night. Sometimes with a group of friends or just by myself with my earphones plugged in. After all, what better company to have than the stars and the ocean, right?

2. Meditate At A Garden Park

Even though a large chunk of Mumbai is a concrete jungle, there are patches of greenery in the city that are worth the visit. Priyadarshini Park at South Bombay, Mindspace garden at Malad, Joggers Park at Bandra, Shivaji Park at Dadar, Hanging Gardens at Malabar Hill, Jio Garden at BKC – are a few of them. You can meditate, work out, go for a run or simply read a book at any of these places.

3. Play Chess At Carter Road

If you have a chess set at home and you need a change of atmosphere to play it, then, head to Carter road! Just opposite the Cafe Coffee Day, there are outdoor stone chess tables. The fresh breeze, ocean waves and Bandra’s bustling energy will help you to enjoy your game even more!

4. Go Antique Shopping at Chor Bazaar

Travelling with a friend is much better than travelling alone here. You can get cheated or robbed if you look like an easy target. However, this place is still worth a visit. From old Bollywood posters to vintage cameras, this street in South Mumbai is the hub for all things antique. The best time to visit is morning to early afternoon.

5. Click Pictures At Gateway Of India

The best time to visit this place is early in the morning. Less of a crowd makes a good time to capture pretty pictures in the morning light. Also, the view of the Taj from here is spectacular!

6. Vist The Kala Ghoda Festival!

This festival has no entry fee – it’s free for all! It happens every year on the first Saturday of February, and usually goes on for 9 days. Whether you love art or just looking for some visual inspiration, this festival is a must-visit! It’s definitely worth your time.

7. Instagram Away The ‘Love Mumbai’ Sign!

What better way to prove your love for ‘the city of dreams’ than by clicking a selfie of it, right? Back in 2016, Kala Ghoda Festival and Humans of Bombay did an online petition to put up an art installation on one of Mumbai’s landscapes. After that, St+art India put in a request to the BMC and guess what happened after? It got accepted! You can visit 5 of Mumbai’s selfie points at – Ghatkopar, Bandra, Malad, Juhu and the Promenade at Bandra Reclamation.

8. Make A Trip To Haji Ali

Situated at Worli, Haji Ali attracts 1000+ tourists a day. This Sufi shrine is Mumbai’s historic landmark and was built in 1431 AD (Yes, it’s more than 400 years old). Since the tides are low during the winter season, March to October are the best months to visit. Here’s a fun fact: Haji Ali is made from ‘Makrana’ marble. If you recall, it’s the same marble used by Emperor Shah Jahan to build the Taj Mahal. Pretty cool, right?

9. Spend A Day In Bandra & South Bombay

If you visit South Bombay, you’re bound to spot gothic style architecture. A few structures that are at the top of my mind are – Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai High Court, Gateway Of India, The Taj Mahal Palace, the Knesset Eliyahoo Synagogue and the World Trade Centre. In Bandra, you’ve got to take a walk down Chapel road to admire the city’s street art, and the fishing and farming communities. If you like Churches, Mount Mary’s Basilica is a gorgeous piece of historic art. Also, don’t forget to head to Bandra Fort to catch a glimpse of the majestic Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

10. Play Volleyball On The Beach

If you head to Versova or Juhu beach, you’ll always find a Volleyball match going on. If not volleyball, then cricket! Ever felt the urge to join in? Next time, walk up to the team and ask them if they need a new player! They are likely to happily welcome you on board. After all, some of the best things in life are free *Wink*
