Paisa Feko, Tamasha Dekho? The 6 Supremely Expensive Divorces That Shook Bollywood

If you’re happy and you know it, thank your ex (clap clap!)

Divorces can be tough. They involve a lot of arguments, emotional outbursts and drama. That’s a part of the separation. But not just your heart, sometimes they can cause a massive dent in your wallet too.

Love does come at a cost, sometimes a heavy one, and most of the divorces in Bollywood are proof. The split of some celebrity couples might have upset fans but the truly jilted were those who ended up paying heavy alimony to their partners. Below are some of the most expensive B-town divorces ever:

1. Hrithik Roshan And Sussanne Khan

Year Of Separation:

2014

Settlement:

Sussanne Khan demanded a whopping sum of Rs. 400 crores. Even though Hrithik Roshan denied paying this much amount to his ex-wife, rumours were rife on Twitter that the actor ended up giving her Rs. 380 crores. Well, 20 crores is not really a bargain now, is it?

What Went Wrong:

Hrithik married his childhood sweetheart Sussanne in 2000. The couple’s fairytale romance was seen as an ideal relationship by many until they ended their 14-year-long marriage. Rumour has it that when Hrithik was linked up with his Kites co-star Bárbara Mori, Susanne wasn’t very happy, and therefore, asked for a divorce. There was also speculation that both of them accused each other of cheating. However, the exact reason for their separation still isn’t clear. Hrithik and Sussanne have two kids – Hridhaan and Hrehaan.

2. Arbaaz Khan And Malaika Arora

Year Of Separation:

2016

Settlement:

Malaika Arora asked for alimony of Rs. 10-15 crores from Arbaaz Khan.

What Went Wrong:

Malaika apparently always had a problem with Arbaaz’s not-so-successful career. Moreover, the actress supposedly felt like an outsider in Arbaaz’s family. She was also said to have issues with brother-in-law Salman Khan, who never approved of her fashion choices or her friends. Malaika also didn’t get along with the Khan sisters, Alvira and Arpita. Malaika and Arbaaz have a 16-year-old kid, Arhaan Khan, from their marriage. However, the couple seems to have moved on and there are rumours that Malaika Arora will soon tie the knot with boyfriend Arjun Kapoor.

3. Saif Ali Khan And Amrita Singh

Year Of Separation:

1991

Settlement:

The alimony amount was never revealed but it is believed that it was almost half of Saif’s fortune. In an old interview, Saif was quoted saying, “I’m supposed to give Amrita Rs 5 crore, of which I’ve already given her approximately Rs 2.5 crore. Also, I’m paying Rs 1 lakh per month until my son becomes 18. I’m not Shah Rukh Khan. I don’t have that kind of money. I’ve promised her I’ll pay up the rest of the money, and I will, even if I’ve to slog till I drop dead.”

What Went Wrong:

Saif and Amrita’s marriage never went down well with Saif’s family because of the huge age difference (12 years) between the two. However, Amrita was miffed by Saif’s infidelity. The final nail in the coffin, according to Amrita, was Saif’s alleged affair with Rosa Catalano, an Italian dancer who he was courting overseas. The couple got divorced after 13 years of marriage. They have two children together – Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Ali Khan.

4. Farhan Akhtar And Adhuna Bhabani

Adhuna asked to keep the couple’s Mumbai residence ‘Vipassna (a sprawling 10,000 sq. ft. bungalow in Bandstand) for herself. Farhan is also contributing a major amount in the security and upbringing of their two daughters – Shakya and Akira.

What Went Wrong:

Another jolt to the industry was when actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar ended his 16-year long marriage with wife Adhuna Bhabani. The couple maintains that this split is a result of ‘growing apart over the years’. There was some unsubstantiated buzz that Farhan called it quits because of his affair with Wazir co-star Aditi Rao Hydari. However, both Farhan and Aditi refuted the rumours. Farhan Akhtar is now dating singer Shibani Dandekar and the couple is rumoured to tie the knot very soon.

Settlement:

Aamir Khan had to reportedly pay alimony of Rs. 50 crores to ex-wife Reena at the time of their divorce.

What Went Wrong:

Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta eloped against their parents’ wish. However, the couple started drifting apart after some time. The reason for the divorce is said to be temperamental differences but it is believed that it was Aamir’s wandering ways that led to the final split. Reena and Aamir have two kids – Ira Khan and Junaid Khan. He remarried Kiran Rao in 2005 and has a little boy named Azad Rao Khan with her.

What Went Wrong:

The couple parted ways after 11 years of being together as they never really had a happy marriage. It is believed that the rift in their relationship was due to Sunjay’s disloyal nature. The couple filed for a divorce in 2014 and the two got legally divorced in May 2016.
